Frieda Alves peacefully passed away on January 31, 2018 with her daughter by her side holding her hand. She was born on September 29, 1930 to Ernst and Rosa Ammann. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Gene Alves and her brother, Edward Fischer. Frieda is survived by her son, William (Kathy) Alves; daughter, Susan (Joseph) Grist; grandson, Anthony Alves; sister, Erna (Rod) Schneider; and her beloved cat Cottonball. Frieda was born in San Jose, Costa Rica and at a young age she moved with her family to Munich, Germany where she survived the perils of World War II. She came to America in 1948 with her mother and her sister to join her brother in San Antonio, Texas, followed by her father two years later. Frieda and Gene were married on September 26, 1953 and she was a long time resident of New Braunfels, living in the same house Gene Built. Frieda was a trained seamstress and sewed many dresses, including dirndls, bridesmaids and wedding dresses to help supplement the family income. Over the years she worked at Ma's Cafe on Castell Street, Lizann, Anita's catering and the Alteration Shop. She enjoyed traveling, playing cards and visiting with friends. She also enjoyed gardening and in the early years of their marriage, she and Gene raised beautiful orchids that she made into corsages for many weddings and proms. She was a long time member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She was also a member of the German American Club and a volunteer for bingo at Eden Hill. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Frieda's name to the New Braunfels Humane Society for her love of animals. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Comal Cemetery. Special thanks to Karen, Kathy, Gale and Megan of Hope Hospice.     I truly enjoyed every moment I spent with Frieda it was such a pleasure to be her hairstylist for many yrs i enjoyed talking to her and listening to her stories early on but later when either you or Joe brought her I enjoyed having conversations with both of y’all talking about about our lives in what used to be our tiny town of New Braunfels I will truly miss her and seeing and talking to both of y’all my heart and prayers goes out to you and your family
