On February 24, 2018, George Pilgreen, storyteller extraordinaire, went to be with his Lord. George was born to (the late) George and Arlene Wright Pilgreen on December 22, 1932 in Humble, Texas. He was big brother to Shirley Busch (deceased), Evalyn Ellisor and Randy and Michael Pilgreen. George attended Texas A&M and graduated from Sam Houston State. He served in the US Army stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso after which he began a long career in the auto parts business. George also worked in the oil business during which time he met and married Sylvia. Always a fan of the Aggies, George loved his God, his country and Texas. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, in his later years at Stokes’ ranch. George is survived by his wife, Sylvia, and children and their spouses: Damon Pilgreen (Josie), Laura Jeter (Vince) and Todd Lang (Becca). His grandchildren are Nicholas Pilgreen, Genevieve (Niall) McMaster, Caleb and Colin Jeter and Tucker, Annie, Liza Lang. Jack Pilgreen and Sophie McMaster are his great-grandchildren. A celebration of George’s remarkable life will be held on Saturday, March 3rd, at 11:00am at Oakwood Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Oakwood Baptist Church’s Building Fund.

  1. My condolences to the Pilgreen families. I’m sorry to hear about the loss of dear George. Some Bible scriptures that have helped me during times of loss include Isaiah 26:19 and Psalm 37:28,29 which states in part: “Your dead ones will live…They will rise up”. The Bible also says “The righteous themselves will possess the earth and they will forever reside upon it”. Therefore the Bible promises that we may be reunited with our loved ones lost in death. This is further confirmed by John 5:28,29 which says “Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out”. This is possible thanks to Jesus Christ’s ransom sacrifice. Thus we have a genuine hope of everlasting life in a world without wickedness or suffering. I hope that these scriptures will be of some comfort to you.

  2. I had the privilege of knowing George through the eyes of my dear friend, his lovely wife, Sylvia. They shared a precious, special loving marriage that I knew would last a life time. George was such a kind, respectful, endearing person….just a great gentle soul! To know him was to love him! He will certainly will be missed, but I know his presence in heaven has added to the great angels above watching over all of us. That was George, just a great man!
    Love you, George……Stephanie

  3. George was one of the great ones. He was a blessing to our family, and like a second dad to me. He was a calm and confident man who followed the “Cowboy Code of Ethics”. George was well read, always with a book in hand. He had a great sense of humor which was often accompanied by his great laugh. He was also a proud American who understood the value of those who have died for our Country and respected the value and costs of our freedom. He was the best thing that ever happened to my mom, Sylvia. His departure came too soon, but he didn’t come up short in any way. The accomplishments of his time on earth are amazing. He was a great story teller, because he LIVED the story. Thank God for George W. Pilgreen.

  4. We will all miss George and his smile. Although we are hurting now, he taught us all a lot, and it was obvious how much he loved the Lord, never hesitating to share the Good Word with us. George was a kind and generous man, always giving and always wanting to show everyone a good time. We have so many memories of good times through the years, especially in New Braunfels. He always kept such a peaceful and happy attitude, and just sitting on George and Sylvia’s back porch visiting was a treat for all of us. We should all write down some of the stories he told us and never let them get away. Thank you, George, we miss you, but we also know we will see you again and that you will be one of our best angels. And thank you, Sylvia, for taking care of this man who was so important and special to all of us. Michael and Chris
