Jewell Prescott Anderson

Jewell Anderson, born on April 30, 1946, died surrounded by family and friends from complications due to COPD at 6:15 on February 1, 2018. Jewell was the only child of a Kansas farming couple, Paul and Hazel Prescott. Her parents preceded her by death. She grew up helping her father work the farm while her mother tended to the home. Her father nicknamed her Johnny since she filled the role of a farmer’s son. Growing up in St John, Kansas, she bought most of her clothes from a Sears Catalogue. As an adult, her favorite activity was to shop in brick-n-mortar stores, feeling all of the material before she purchased anything. At Macksville High School, Jewell played the flute and was on the girls’ basketball team. To her disappointment, she was required to take home economics rather than shop. Her strength from working the farm and horseback riding was such that she could beat any of the twelve boys in her senior class in arm wrestling, and many of them were farmers as well. Her favorite outside-of-school activity was barrel-racing, which she did through most of her high-school years. Jewell went to junior college for a short while and later married Lonis ‘Andy’ Anderson, the father of her only child, Amber Koger who survives her along with her daughter Maverick. Both Andy and Jewell drove tractor-trailers for a living. She could drive them forward, but not back them. She was said to sweet-talk other drivers to back her rig for her. While driving, she learned to drink her coffee black. During harvesting season, Jewell would return to the farm with her family to help her father with the crops. The family settled in Canyon Lake 30 years ago and resided in a Log Cabin on FM36. Andy, a disabled veteran, preceded her in death. Jewell worked in property management for Century 21 for 13 years. She took ill with throat cancer and retired after surviving treatment. Her daughter married Mike Koger. Jewell met her long-term boyfriend Mic Lang afterwards. Her granddaughter Maverick was born in 2015. A celebration of life for Jewell will be held on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. at her log home, 8888 FM 306. Visitors are asked to bring lawn chairs.
