Charles Roy Crowe, Jr., lovingly known as “Buddy” by family and friends, gained his heavenly wings on September 29, 2024 after passing peacefully while surrounded by family at home on Canyon Lake. Buddy was born on September 24, 1948 in San Antonio, Texas to Margaret and Charles Crowe. He was the only boy in his family, and a middle child, so Buddy quickly learned how to test boundaries while leveraging his charm to avoid trouble during the misadventures of his youth.
Growing up on the south side of San Antonio is something Buddy always spoke about fondly because of the lifelong friendships created while being part of such a tight knit community. The abundance of stories from his days on Hiawatha Street with two sisters, Kathy and Lydia, will continue to entertain our family for many years to come. Buddy was drafted by the U.S. Army shortly after high school and served in Vietnam during the late 1960’s. Upon returning from military service, he had a successful career with City Public Service that covered four decades and multiple power plants in San Antonio. The man was an expert at lighting up rooms literally and figuratively.
Buddy enjoyed a good party and was well known for his skills on the dance floor. That likely came from his passion for music. He loved it all. Rhythm and Blues, Motown, Classic Rock, Country, and even the rap music he occasionally endured for the sake of his daughters. Some of the fondest memories we share as a family include the lake house dance parties, where Buddy was often the ringleader, or dancing with his daughters on top of his feet during celebrations in their younger years. He especially loved dancing with his beloved wife Kellie, and they lit up together on the dancefloor no matter what record was spinning. It was also a real joy for Buddy to see his granddaughter Greenlee share that same love of dancing. He took advantage of every opportunity to dance with her even as his steps started to slow over the last few years.
Buddy was a natural athlete and played a multitude of sports. He excelled at baseball in his youth, but as Buddy grew older most of his spare time was spent playing golf, hunting, or watching sports. He fully embraced the role of armchair coach as a dedicated fan of the Spurs, Cowboys, Astros, and Longhorns. Having daughters and family that lived in Houston often resulted in spirited banter over the Spurs & Rockets rivalry. There may have also been a friendly wager made on occasion to add an element of fun. Buddy rarely missed a chance to have fun and encouraged others to live their lives to the fullest. We hope that spirit will be remembered by all who had the good fortune to call him a friend.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his wife Kellie Crowe and his daughters Carla Crowe (Jennifer Friday and son John Monclova) of Atascocita, Texas and Kelly Crowe (daughter Greenlee) of Kingwood, Texas. Buddy is also survived by his sisters Kathleen Sullivan de Castillejo of Houston, TX and Lydia Bart of Boerne, TX as well as numerous nephews, nieces, extended family and friends.
We are extremely thankful to Hope Hospice Care’s staff for the tremendous support and kindness they provided our family. In lieu of flowers, please donate to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or a charity of your choice in honor of Buddy.
A graveside service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, Texas 78209, on Friday, October 18, 2024 at 9:45 AM.
