Edward George Schaper, Jr, 71, recently of Fischer, Texas passed away after an illness on December 28, 2024. He was born on March 14, 1953 in Jersey City, New Jersey, the son of the late Edward G. Schaper, Sr. and Elizabeth Mory Schaper. Ed grew up in Fords, New Jersey and attended Fairleigh Dickinson University before transferring and graduating from Florida Tech in Melbourne, Florida where he met his wife, Lisa. They were married in 1977. Ed worked as an environmental scientist for the oil and gas industry which took him and his family to New Orleans and Lafayette, Louisiana; Buffalo, New York and Pittsburgh, PA, before settling in the Woodlands, Texas for 26 years. He and Lisa retired to Fischer, Texas in 2021.

Ed had a deep love of the sun, the beach, and water of all kinds: the Atlantic ocean of his childhood and college years, Lake Erie in Buffalo, New York and the rivers of Central Texas. He loved nature and gardening, later becoming a Master Gardener and volunteering his gardening skills to churches and public gardens such as libraries here in Comal County. In his later years Ed found great comfort in exploring his spirituality in the Unity Church and took classes and courses to become a Unity mentor and teacher. He had just begun to be a mentor to elementary school children before his illness. He was a kind and loving man.

Ed was survived by his wife of 47 years, Lisa Montalvo Schaper, his sons Eric and Matthew, his daughter Alexandra and son-in-law Kevin Rafferty, grandson John Francis (Jack) Rafferty, sisters Joyce Masterson and Ellen Cifrese, nephew Nicholas Cifrese and nieces Kelly Morrison and Amber Chubb, as well as 5 grandnephews.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 22 at 2 p.m. at Unity of New Braunfels, 408 Gruene Road, New Braunfels. Though everyone will deeply miss him, Ed’s spirit will forever live on in our hearts. We take comfort in knowing he is at peace.
