Guy Eugene Shuttlesworth, 95, known by those who loved him as “Doc”, shuffled his way into the arms of his Savior on March 29, 2026. We are comforted knowing he is enjoying his perfect golf game surrounded by all his loved ones who have gone before.

Doc was born June 22, 1930 in Bullard, Texas to William and Nina Pearl Shuttlesworth. The middle son of three boys, he spent his childhood creating mischief and making sure his brothers were always enjoying life. A talented basketball player, he loved telling about his high school team winning state.

After enlisting and serving in the Air Force during the Korean War, he began his lifelong love of learning. Education was very important to him. Doc worked his way through school, while raising a family, earning his Bachelors degree from SFA in 1957, his Masters of Social Work in 1962 from Our Lady of the Lake, an additional Masters in Psychology from Texas A&I in 1962, and his PhD in Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh in 1970. He worked as a professor at Baylor University in the School of Sociology and Social Work from 1962-1969. Doc went on to share his wisdom as a professor at the University of Texas at Austin from 1969 until he retired in 1993. Those who were lucky enough to hear his lectures knew they were in the presence of the best. He truly loved making an impact on the lives of those dedicated to serving the geriatric population.

Doc enjoyed his retirement by attending auctions and tinkering around his many “junk” shops appropriately named “Doc’s”. He would spend his days talking and sharing stories with whoever passed through the doors. No one was ever a stranger, and he made sure each felt they were the most important customer.

The ultimate family man, Doc lived for times the entire Shuttlesworth clan would gather, whether it be Thanksgiving or a random visit. He will be remembered for his ability to tell the best stories of growing up (leaving everyone laughing to the point of tears), as well as his famous ghost stories.

Doc was preceded in death by his parents, brothers William and David Shuttlesworth, and son, J.R. Shuttlesworth. Those left to carry on his love and laughter are his daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Larry Klein, son, Bill Shuttlesworth, seven grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. We are all better because we were loved by him.

The family would like to thank New Beginnings Hospice for their love and friendship. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date for the family.
