Mary Delight Greenwell was born November 15, 1951 in San Antonio, Texas. She departed from this world and went to her permanent home in Heaven on August 21, 2022 at the age of 71.
She was the youngest of four children born to Mary Elizabeth and David Park Martin. She was predeceased by her parents and her husband Patrick Henry Greenwell, her older sister Sharon Martin Turner and her older brother David Park Martin, Jr. — all of San Antonio.
She is survived by her son, Clayton Lowell Greenwell, her daughter and granddaughter, Chelsea Marie Cook and Luna Scarlet Cook, and her oldest sister, Valerie Martin Bailey, plus many cousins and friends.
Mary was a talented musician. She taught piano at the Alamo Music Company and also privately. For a brief time she had her own music studio where she taught her students. She served as a church pianist for many years at St. Josephs A.M.E. church. In addition to this, she co-founded a popular local all girls band known as the Pink Panthers. She was very proud of the Pink Panthers and loved performing with this group.
Mary was a gentle, kind, and cheerful soul who was dearly loved by all who knew her. She was never heard criticizing people. She was a gracious friend to all. She was a loving mother, sister, aunt, and cousin who had a huge heart for giving and a special love for animals.

In 1968 I played bass guitar in Marys band, The Pink Panthers. We played a lot of gigs in San Antonio, even at Hemisfairs Battle of the Bands, and on a barge float in the Fiesta River Parade. It was all a lot of fun! Mary was a great musician and very sweet person. I recently spoke with her on the telephone this summer and she sounded very happy in spite of her health issues. Mary and I met our first week at Churchill High over 55 years ago and immediately became fast friends. We loved all the same things: literature, art, animals, nature. But music was the focal point for us both, and soon Mary had started our band, the Pink Panthers. It was definitely the high point of our school years. Mary was such a talented musician and absolutely fearless. If she wanted to accomplish something she just did it, no matter the challenges. Truly inspiring.
We had so many adventures and fun over the next two decades. From music classes at college to countless concerts (rock, classical and even opera) to being “best ladies” at each other’s weddings. With families and careers we lost touch, but I was so happy to find her again a few years ago. It was like no time at all had passed and we picked up right where we left off.
Mary was such an open and loving soul with an unflagging enthusiasm for everything. I so wish we’d had more time, we always think there will be more time. I can’t believe she’s actually gone and I miss her so much.
Fly and be free, dearest friend, and know you will always live in my heart.

I was the drummer in the Pink Panthers band. It was a novelty back in the 60’s. I loved hearing mary sing. She played rhythm guitar and sometimes lead. A very talented woman. Rest in peace Mary Martin. Cathy
