Muriel Jean Zachary departed this life on June 25, 2019. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia on November 7, 1945 to Foye Mason (Smokey) Zachary and Cosma Stacks (Suzy) Zachary, both of whom were native Texans. With the end of WWII, Jean and her parents returned to Texas, where she spent the rest of her life. Jean grew up in Houston. She attended Mark Twain, Pershing and Bellaire, and the University of Texas in Austin for three years. She graduated from the University of Houston in 1967 and began a teaching career at Johnston Junior High in Houston. She taught prior to, and following, the births of her two sons, John Zachary Sturdevant and Richard Thomas Sturdevant. During the mid 1980’s, she moved to Horseshoe Bay and then to the town of Llano. During the 1990’s, she worked as a clerk for the Llano County Appraisal District, the Llano County Treasurer’s office and then served as the first Grant Coordinator for the county. She retired in 2016 from Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area, where she had worked since 1999 as a case manager, first in Llano, Burnet and Blanco counties, and completing her career in Hays county. Jean is survived by her two greatest accomplishments, her sons, John Sturdevant and Rick Sturdevant, each son unique in his own way, and her absolutely delightful grandchildren Hadley Brooke and Landon Foye Sturdevant. Also, surviving Jean are cousins Herbert Wendell (Andy) Andridge III of San Antonio and William (Bill) Zachary of Santa Monica, California. Her sister, Mary Jane Zachary died in 2017. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:30 AM on July 10th at the Cooper's BBQ, New Braunfels Party Room. The family would appreciate a RSVP to John at sturdy1171@gmail.com As Jean wished, her ashes will be scattered by her immediate family at Walnut Springs Ranch in Llano at a later date. For those that wish, please donate to the Crisis Center of Comal County, PO Box 310344, New Braunfels, TX 78131, your local PBS television station, your local library, or since Jean was such a caretaker of stray cats, we ask that you donate to the Humane Society of the New Braunfels Area. donations can go here - https://www.hsnba.org/donate/ Jean’s life was a good one and complete with so many special friends, family and fun times. She enjoyed traveling and felt fortunate to have seen so many parts of our grand country and many countries of the world during her many travels both in the States and abroad. As she would often say: “Hallelujah”! Blessed are you, LORD God of Israel, from eternity to eternity; Let all the people say, “Amen!” Hallelujah!

Guestbook

  1. Jean is one of those “true friends” who will remain in my heart. Her consistency in keeping us “up-dated” regarding BHS friendships was delightful.I will definitely miss her informative e/mails as well her loving spirit. and will always consider her a precious friend. Her spontaneous phone calls were so special and will genuinely be missed . I don’t have the words to convey the void I feel.
Hugs and love to the many high school friends I do treasure. Dora F. Grider

Jo Beth, thank you for your e/m…I appreciate

  2. Oh, how I will miss our phone conversations and our travels. Jean is such a wonderful, kind, opinionated, political confidant and friend. We lived through so many ups and downs in each other’s lives a there is a hole in my heart without her.
Hugs to John, Rick, grandchildren, friends and ex-coworkers who are missing her at this time.
    Peace & Blessings,
    Verna Hazlewood

  3. Jean is a Sister that I never had. We have made so many memories together. Our Mothers taught school together and our Dads played golf together. We carpooled together to Bellaire High School and roomed together at the University of Texas. Betty Lou, Jean, and Jo Beth shared happy times and sad times and were always there for each other in person or on the phone. I will miss both of them now, but know that someday our souls will reunite.

  4. Over the past 10 years, it was a pleasure to share many, many happy hour visits with Jean. We didn’t solve any of the world’s problems, didn’t even try, just a few adult beverages while talking about family, friends, classmates, retirement, travel and sports. Jean was a special friend and will very much be missed.
    Tommy
