Ronald Lynn Berry, (WA5BUG), husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away March 23,2021at the age of 73. Ron was born January 6, 1948 at Robstown, Texas to Albert David and Leona Eugenia Reagan Berry. Ron was raised in the Banquete area until his dad was transferred to LaPorte, Texas. There he graduated high school in 1965. In 1968 he entered the Army and served in Viet Nam. Ron and Deanne Davis were married on June, 1970 in Houston, TX, they later divorced; to this union they had one son David Berry. Ron and Rita Schellhamer-Wears married March 19, 1983 in LaPorte, Texas; to this union they had one son Dallas Berry. He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, x-wife, aunts and uncles and some of his cousins. Ron is survived by his wife Rita of 38 years, daughter Elisia Martorana (Joe) of Tamarac, Florida, David (Nicole) of Schertz, Dallas (Maggie) of Marion and step-son Dammon Wears (Blanca) of Lake McQueeney, and his sister, Cheryl Berry Balko of New Braunfels. Grandchildren Dillon, Kelsey and Cassidy Berry of Schertz, Aurora Berry of Marion, step grandchildren Bryce of Corpus Christi, Conner, Kasi of League City and Trinity Wears of Seguin, Zelma, Xenia and Marco Quiroz, Raymond and Troy Flores of Lake McQueeney, Great Grandsons Rowan and Silas Wears of Corpus Christi, nephew Bobby Balko, sister-in-law Janet (Cliff) Frame, and numerous cousins and friends. Ron or as many people knew him by WA5BUG or BUG, received his Amateur Radio License in 1961 and turned his hobby into a lifelong profession. Not only building and operating the MARS station in Viet Nam on Dragon Mountain. He was in the 2-way radio business for years, but began helping build and designed this new thing called Cellular telephone systems since 1984 for several large companies. Later being an RF Engineer for several large companies designing Microwave systems, and Wireless internet systems. Being an Amateur Radio operator for so many years has put him in contact with people of all walks of life in several parts of the world. A memorial service to be held at First United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Fort Sam, in San Antonio, Texas.   2. I met Ron in 1968 in Radio school at Fort Ord California. We were both ham radio operators and passed the Army’s morse code test on the first day of class. After that, we were dismissed from school each afternoon and operated the post’s MARS station instead, completing many two way phone calls between US servicemen in Vietnam and their loved ones in the US. We did this for many months before we were sent to Vietnam. Ron was assigned to a MARS station in the north and I was assigned to one in the south. I last saw him in Vietnam late in my tour when he made a trip down to my station to visit. He was bold and adventurous.
