She faced tragedy, heartache, good times and bad times with strength and courage. “Velda” was a young bride, marrying Kenneth Hadlock at the age of 18. The marriage was blessed with the birth of six healthy children. Kenneth worked and always provided for his large family. He sheared sheep up on the mountain early on and later became a successful business owner. She was a stay at home Mom, making clothes for the children, washing, ironing, cooking, cleaning while loving and tending to the children. In 1962 she left her little home town, moved to Texas with Kenneth and the children to better serve their customers. They leased a building and got started in San Antonio. Also began looking for a place more like home. They settled in New Braunfels where they purchased the Big Red Mercantile building from Henry Gruene. Hadlock & Fox Mfg Co., Inc moved to the new town and new building and ready for business in 1965. Velda worked in the office, directing phone calls and doing their payroll. As the company grew and expanded, they purchased three more Gruene properties. As the little ghost town begin to thrive and come back to life, it was no longer a place for manufacturing, so after 15 years in Gruene the buildings were sold and they build at a new location.
