Vera Anne Allen

Vera Anne (Maroney) Allen passed from this life on December 2, 2017, surrounded by family. She was born in Eagle Pass, Texas, on November 12, 1944, to William C. and Wilberta Maroney, both originally from Kokomo, Indiana. She met the love of her life, William F. Allen, at Southside High School in San Antonio, Texas. They attended the University of Texas at Austin together, and married on May 29, 1965. While Bill was in Vietnam in 1970, Vera gave birth to their only child, Erin Marie Allen.
Vera taught second grade for Austin Independent School District for two years, then left to join the school at Austin Bible Church, called Christian Heritage Academy. She worked at the church school both as teacher and principal, until she retired in 1980 due to illness. She homeschooled Erin through middle school. Vera’s hobbies included sewing clothes, crocheting, and hostessing great parties for Erin’s youth group. Her house was the one where the children congregated to play, and in 1992, she taught Erin and a group of Erin’s friends how to play contract bridge.
Vera was preceded into the next life by her parents and her brothers George W. Maroney, John Robert Maroney, Thomas C. Maroney, and Daniel R. Maroney. She is survived by her husband and daughter, her sisters Linda K. Marcum and E. Jayne Neal, and nine nieces and nephews: Jenna E. Marcum, Daniel R. Maroney, Jr., G. John Marcum, Michael J. Marcum, Katya A. Voss, Daniella E. Houk, Isaac N. Neal, Lydia K. Grindatto, and Sophia A. Neal.
A Graveside service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio on Tuesday, December 19 ,2017 at 10:00 a.m. An open house will follow at 1241 Hollyhock, New Braunfels, TX 78130. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Vera’s name to her favorite charity, Paralyzed Veterans of America.

I lived with my Aunt Vera and her husband, my Uncle Bill, from birth to age 7. They shared their home with me, provided for me and loved me and my mom unconditionally, for which I will be eternally grateful. I have so many wonderful memories of growing up with her. One of my favorites is when she was trying to help me with my algebra homework and I was not understanding it. She said to me “Jenna, you are not understanding this. That means I need to think of another way to explain it to you. Give me just a minute while I think.” She thought a minute and tried again, and I understood! What a wonderful teacher she was! Vera was patient, loving, kind and very generous to me my whole life. I miss her so much. I rejoice that I will see her again in Heaven one day, and I thank God for allowing me to be her niece. I am so very blessed to have known her! I love you, Aunt Vera.
Vera Allen introduced Warren and me to beautiful Austin, TX, in the spring of 1977. We moved here that fall to help with Christian Heritage Academy at Austin Bible Church. She was Warren’s dependable guide to curriculum and teaching the children. She loved the children she taught. Vera’s grasp of the Christian life and God’s Word made her a teacher in that area , too. She left many of us that wisdom and example. God has taken her Home to Heaven with full rewards. I do “thank my God on every remembrance of her”…
My condolences to the Allen families. I’m sorry to hear about the loss of dear Vera. Some Bible scriptures that have helped me during times of loss include Isaiah 26:19 and Psalm 37:28,29 which states in part: “Your dead ones will live…They will rise up”. And the Bible also says “The righteous themselves will possess the earth, and they will forever reside upon it”. Therefore the Bible promises that we may be reunited with our loved ones lost in death by means of an earthly resurrection. This is further confirmed by John 5:28,29 which says “Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out”. This is possible thanks to Jesus Christ’s ransom sacrifice. Thus we have a genuine hope of everlasting life in a world without wickedness or suffering. I hope that these scriptures will be of some comfort to you.
My precious sister, Vera, is with our Lord in heaven today! I praise God for His gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ, and am so very thankful to be assured that we’ll be together again one day – no more sorrows, no more tears, no more pain! What a blessed promise! She was my dearest friend all of my life, and always loved my whole family unconditionally. I knew I could count on her and my brother-in-law, Bill for anything and everything. It was such a blessing to spend two months recently with Vera and Bill. Vera and I had many conversations during that time about our lives, our memories, and the wonderful prospect of being with the Lord one day. I had no idea at the time that Vera would get to meet Him so soon, but God did. I’m very thankful for everything she taught me, and all that we meant to each other on this earth. I so look forward to being with her again, in God’s time.
I was in Vera’s Bridge Club, and I remember how silly she’d be….especially her “Cousin It”
impersonation. She’d try and scare us girls that way, but I couldn’t help but bust out laughing instead!
