Obituary for John Thomas Madden

John T. Madden, 83, unexpectedly went home to be with his Lord Saturday evening, March 31, 2018 surrounded by his family at his residence.

John was born at home in Marquez, TX on November 15, 1934, a son of the late Ben & Gertrude Madden. John graduated from Marquez High School and was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving as a Training Instructor.

John was also employed at Baker Oil Tools in Houston, TX for 21 yrs, was owner and manager of Madden’s Country Store in Marquez, TX, Alamo Group in Seguin, TX and retired in 2012 from Armortex in Schertz, TX after 15 years of employment.

John served as Mayor of Marquez TX from 1984-1988 and was the Football Announcer of the Leon Cougars in Leon County, TX.

John was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite for over 56 years with memberships in Deer Park Lodge 1362 and Jewett Lodge 427.

A loyal family man, John kept his family and friends entertained with his gift of story telling, humor and clever quips that made everyone around him laugh and feel loved and right at home in his presence.

John was an avid golfer, gifted singer and guitar player. His bar-b-cue would have friends and family gathering from miles around. In his earlier years, John played fast pitch softball for 30 years, earning the nickname “Whip”. He won the World Championship for the Lackland Warhawks of Lackland Air Force Base and the State Championship for Latin American League playing for Denver Harbor Bears. He also won the Houston Chronicle City Championship after pitching 3 straight no hitters.

John is survived by his loving wife of 21 yrs, Chyrel Madden of New Braunfels, TX.

John had 3 sons, Michael Holmes and his wife, Kathy of Carrollton, TX, Randy Madden of New Braunfels, TX and Greg Madden and his wife, Mona of Marquez, TX.

There are 7 grandchildren: Stacy Madden and her husband Evan, Aaron Madden, Jacob Madden, Dalton Madden and his wife Maryssa, Taylor Madden, Lindsay Howell and her husband Ken, Hunter Dove and her husband Brent along with 6 great-grandchildren with 2 additional great-grandchildren on the way.

John also leaves behind a brother, Ben Madden of Marquez, TX, two daughter-in-laws, Vickie Madden of New Braunfels, TX and Karen Madden of New Braunfels, TX and his 2 loyal and loving companions, his cats, Zorro and Luna.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, JoAnn Madden on March 12, 1990 after 32 years of marriage, a sister Doris Easterling and grandson Kyle Madden.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children or the American Heart Association.
