Jo Ann Hackney
January 31, 1941 – May 31, 2025
On May 31, 2025 Jo Ann Hackney left this world with her house filled with the ones she loved. As she passed, the family began to gather to see her one last time, to tell her their “I love you”s. She is no longer confined to a failing body filled with pain. She is now free — free to ascend to heaven, free to move among us in all the ways she shaped our lives. But her family knows this isn’t goodbye. If you knew Jo Ann, you knew how deeply she loved the family she built.
A parent doesn’t just raise children—they pass along pieces of their soul. Jo Ann left hers in each of us: in her children, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, as we gather, we bring all the pieces of her together. That’s how we’ll keep her close: by coming together, by carrying her forward in our love for one another.
Jo Ann was never short on love. She lived a true love story for the ages in the life she shared with Ed Hackney – the kind of connection that people write books about. For them, it was an instant spark that grew into an untameable flame. And that was how Jo Ann lived her life, fiercely, with love and a charismatic sassiness that was magnetic to all those around her.
Jo Ann was born in Delhi, Louisiana, and later moved to Texas, where she raised five children and ran her own pottery business. Afterward, she began a 22-year career with the Comal County District Attorney’s Office, proudly serving from 1987 until her retirement in 2009.
She is preceded in death by Glen Hackney (son), Donavan Allen (great grandchild), Clarence Peterson (father), Sybil Caraway (mother), Urshal Peterson (brother), Rosa Lee White (sister), Charles Peterson (brother), Clayton Hartman (son-in-law), survived by Ed Hackney (husband), Ronny (son) and Karen Allen, Dallas (son) and Tina Hackney, Velvet Itri (daughter) and Tim Clifton, Meike Hartman p(daughter), Christine Allen (granddaughter), Stephanie Allen (granddaughter), Carli Ohala (granddaughter), Ronin Hackney (grandson), Justin Hackney (grandson), Kendall Hartman (grandson), Lindsey Jones (granddaughter), Ryan Hartman (grandson), Analiza Hackney (granddaughter), Travis Harper (grandson), Thomas Harper (grandson), 12 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild.
