Darren Michael Bernaix, age 58, passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at his home in New Braunfels, Texas.
Darren was born on December 14, 1967, in Granite City, Illinois, the son of Charlie Bernaix and June (Chastain) Bernaix.
Darren proudly served 10 years in the United States Air Force and dedicated nearly 30 years of service to the Department of Defense. His career was highly decorated, earning numerous awards and recognition for his commitment, leadership, and excellence. Darren lived a life defined by service—always showing up for his country, his work, and most importantly, his family.
Outside of his career, Darren loved the outdoors and was happiest when he was hunting, hiking, camping, golfing, boating, or simply enjoying time outside. He was also a loyal New England Patriots fan—especially when it came to “his boyfriend,” Tom Brady—and never missed an opportunity to bring humor into the moment. Darren was often regarded as the “fun guy,” known for his quick wit, sarcastic sense of humor, and the kind of personality that made people instantly feel comfortable around him.
Above all, Darren was a proud and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was the best “Papa” to his sweet grandkids, and his love for them was endless. His presence was larger than life, and his legacy will live on through the laughter he brought, the memories he created, and the love he gave so freely.
Darren was preceded in death by his mother, June (Chastain) Bernaix.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 34 years, Michelle Bernaix; his loving children, Nicole (Bobby) Simpson and Alyssa Ross; his father, Charlie Bernaix; his siblings, Maria Decker and Matthew Bernaix; and his niece, Madison Chamness. He was a proud grandfather to Cole Simpson, Kaylee Simpson, Maverick Simpson, Harper Williams, and Hadlee Ross, and is also survived by extended family, military brothers and sisters, and many dear friends.
In celebration of his life, a service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at Lux Funeral Home Chapel in New Braunfels, Texas. Please arrive by 11:45 a.m. so military honors can commence.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Tunnel to Towers, a foundation dedicated to helping American heroes and their families.

Going to miss my Patriotic brother.
We exchanged texts almost everyday. They were one of my highlights of my day.
Rest in Peace, Patriot.
God Bless
Jeffrey Rush and family
Ill never forget you brother. Truly one of my favorite humans I have ever met . Those Air Force days were some of the best. My prayers are with you Michelle and faimly .
I am broken hearted for his entire family and all of his friends. Darren brought so much fun to every moment I was around him. We spent endless amount of time laughing in 7 and 8 grade band. Reconnecting with him as an adult has been a true gift. He always made everyone feel special and worthy.
Darren thanks for showing us all how much you loved the USA. Your Patriotism was truly contagious. You are one of a kind and you will be missed beyond measure.
Sending prayers for the family during this time. God bless you all.

It so sad to hear of the loss of Darren. He was one nice fellow, great analyst and devoted family man. He will be missed in a powerful way. All of my sympathies and prayers go out to Michelle and the family.
I remember the first time I saw Darren—“Durwood” to many of us—on Baker Flight in the late ’80s. Tall, handsome, a little lanky, with those unmistakable rosy-red cheeks. I can still picture him walking past our section after joking around with Lee and Doc, his cheeks getting redder by the second. It was both adorable and hilarious. What stood out most, though, was that he could dish it right back—quick-witted, sharp, and always ready with just the right amount of sarcasm.
A few months later, Michelle (Ann) joined our wonderfully wacky flight, and those two just clicked. Wildly in love and a little bit crazy in the best possible way—that’s how the story of Darren and Michelle began. We may have been skeptical at first (two strong Type A personalities can make for fireworks!), but over the years it became clear they were truly meant for each other. Together they built incredible careers, traveled the world, loved deeply, and created a beautiful family. They raised two amazing daughters and were blessed with two precious granddaughters who brought them so much joy.
There was something special about that Chicksands assignment for all of us on Baker Flight. I’m not sure why so many different personalities and backgrounds blended so seamlessly—but they did. We worked hard, played hard, and walked through life’s milestones together. We became more than coworkers; we became family. And through the years, that bond has never faded.
Our hearts, prayers, and deepest love are with Michelle, Nicole, and Alyssa.
Rest in peace, Darren. You will always be remembered, and you will be deeply missed.
Even though my association with Darian was a short one it was filled with much joy
I ran into your Dad today at Saint Elizabeth fish fry. I can remember playing in your back yard. Rest in peace my friend.
