Mary Sue Manly Montgomery, age 99, a lifelong resident of Houston, Texas, passed from this life on October 7, 2026, in New Braunfels, Texas.
Born April 28, 1927, in Houston, Texas, Sue was the 1st of 4 children of William Frederick Manly (1904-1988) and Jewell Cordelia Reed (1907-1991). She was a 1944 graduate of Stephen F. Austin High School and worked briefly as a lab technician before marrying Jack Richard Montgomery on January 4, 1947. They lived in Houston where daughter Linda, (1950), and son Jack Jr., (1951), were born. After the children were in high school, she worked part
time in the office of her husband’s dry-cleaning business.
Sue was a devoted member of St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church, participating in the Chapel Class, garden club, and Lydia Circle. She eagerly volunteered for church activities such as fall festivals, churchwide dinners, and decorating projects, and she sang in the Chancel Choir for several years.
She enjoyed flower arranging, gardening, cooking, and maintaining an immaculate home for her family. Sue took great pride in her appearance and was always impeccably dressed, with perfectly coiffed hair and neatly applied makeup.
Sue traveled throughout the United States and abroad with her husband and shared many happy days with Jack at their farm in Leon County, Texas. Her favorite retreat, however, was their second home on Tiki Island, where she loved entertaining family and friends.
Sue was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jack (Wally); her parents, Fred and Jewell Manly; and her sisters, Dorothy Ann Dickson and Betty Lou Coker. She is survived by her children, Linda Beverlin (Steve) of New Braunfels, Texas, and Jack Montgomery Jr. of Spring, Texas; three grandchildren, Melissa Dawn Riley, Travis Clay Beverlin, and Jack Dane Montgomery; and one great-grandchild, Goldie Joy Montgomery.
