On January 7th, 2025, Chief Warrant Officer 5 David Ross Hathaway Sr., born Vernon Wayne Dixon, passed away to be in the arms of the Lord. He was born on November 7th, 1947, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was adopted by Gordan and Lilian Hathaway in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a loving husband and best friend to his wife, Mary Ann Hathaway, and a devoted father to his eight children: Troy, Trent (Jennifer), Todd (Elizabeth), Krystal, Samantha, Adam (Amanda), Kassandra (Beto), and David (Sammy). He was also a proud grandfather to his 12 grandchildren: David, Jordan, McGwire, Hunter, Riley, Aiden, Ysabella, Isabel, Dominick, Mia, Masiah, and Fionn, along with three great-grandchildren and many bonus kids and grandkids who affectionately called him Dad and Pop-Pop.

Throughout his 77 years, he dedicated his life to serving others. As an accomplished U.S. Army veteran, he served 36 years in the Missouri National Guard, Army Reserves, and many years on active duty, finally retiring with the Texas State Guard. He was a Commander for the Military Order of St. John of Jerusalem, a Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus 5262, as well as a Fourth Degree Knight, and a member of the Military of Foreign Wars Association, among other associations. He was deeply loved by his wife, family, and countless friends over the years. Known for his big smile and warm hugs, he will be remembered for his service to his country and community, his passion, and the deep love he had for his wife Mary Ann, his family, and his friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Gordan and Lilian Hathaway, and his mother-in-law, Mary Sheppard.

  2. It was always a pleasure to see Mary Ann and Dave as it was obvious they truly adored each other. David was an amazing man and will be missed by many. His kindness towards others was legendary. RIP

  4. CW5 David Hathaway was a truly competemt Warrant Officer. He was one of the few who could rightfully say, “Its techical, Sir, you wouldn’t understand”, and “You obviously confuse my rank with my authority”, and who had the rare gift of discretiion to know not to say it! He was an admirable man, and a loving husband. He had a ready smile, a perfect joke, and wise words at the ready. We will not soon see his kind again. We will miss his sword and shield.

  5. I met Dave, served with him in the Texas State Guard for 7 years and continued our friendship until his end. Rest in Peace Brother with prayers for his family, friends and loved ones.
