Frank Schlather Jr.

Frank Schlather, Jr., 68, passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2024. Frank was born on September 25, 1955 to Frank Schlather, Sr. and Mary Rosenthal Schlather.

When the Schlather family moved back to New Braunfels from West Texas they moved into a house in Gruene. The rent for the house from Mr. Gruene was 25 dollars a month. Frank loved to ride his bike all around the small sleepy town. When older he helped clean up the bottles after dances at Gruene Hall. What money he found he was able to keep but then the Sheriff department started patrolling the dances and he had to turn the money in. He also loved to play with his cousins and friends behind Gruene Hall. He worked at Hadlock and Fox Saddle Shop along with his dad there. He graduated from Canyon High School in 1976. He joined the Texas National Army in 1976 after High School. He started work at Mission Valley Mills in 1977 in the weave room. His wife transferred from the new mill in 1979 and they started dating shortly after that. He loved listening to the police scanner to see what was going on with the police and ambulance. He loved to watch Nascar races, hunting and reading. He had the chance to go to school as a Sultzer Mechanic on the weaving machine and went to South Carolina. He kept telling Cynthia that they needed to get married since they only had her mother living. His parents and her dad had passed on and he wanted to be married, they were married on May 11, 1996.

Frank, Cynthia and her mom made a trip to Florida to visit Disney World and Epcot and made a couple of more trips there by themselves. They took a trip to Mobile, Alabama and saw Battleship Alabama, submarines and also went to Graceland. Cynthia’s mom wanted to go to Las Vegas one more time. So they met Cindy’s mom and family there. Frank and Cindy also made trips to Corpus Christi to see the Battleship Texas a couple of times. When Cindy’s Uncle Mack passed away in Arizona, they flew in and went to the funeral, and went to the AMARC (Boneyard). Cynthia’s mother paid for their honeymoon to Hawaii. They went to the Arizona Memorial and went on a submarine ride and Frank made it up to the top of the diamond head where the troops watched for the enemy during the war. Then they went to the Big Island and wanted to do a helicopter ride but it was raining and would not fly so they went to see the volcano in person. They were on a small two-lane road and Frank hopefully would not be there at night because he said “it looks like a drunk Hawaiian on a drunk donkey”. Cynthia was driving the speed limit and Frank said try 5 MPH. Frank loved his pets and had an African Grey Parrot, a couple of dogs (some had passed) and cats. All pets are very spoiled and very much loved.

Reggie (Gloria’s son) was so inspired by Frank and looked up to him growing up for him being in the National Guard, Frank encouraged him to join and he did join the Army and always thanks Frank for the encouragement.

He also took his father to town, Frank Schlater Sr., honorable mayor of Gruene, on most Saturday’s.

Frank is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Cynthia Acker-Schlather; sisters, Claire Tsehoepe, Diane Kimber and Patsy Truex; and brother, David Schlather. Frank is survived by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
