Chase Allen Hyland

Chase Allen Hyland, 41, of New Braunfels, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. Born on October 22, 1979 in Houston, Texas, he was the son of Judy Hyland Coltharp and the late Thomas Alvin Hyland.
Chase graduated from Stephen F. Austin University with a Bachelor's Degree in Interpersonal Communications. While there, he was President of Sigma Nu Fraternity Mu Upsilon Chapter and also an active member of the Resident Hall Association.
He received his Master's Degree in History from Texas State University where he began his educational career as a History Instructional Teaching Assistant.
After graduation, his teaching career continued at New Braunfels High School where he worked for 10 years teaching AP & Dual Credit History Classes. He also coached students in UIL Social Studies and Current Issues and was named New Braunfels ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year in 2015.
In addition to teaching, he was a member of the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society and is a founding member of SFA’s chapter of Omnicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society.
Chase is survived by his wife, Carrie Ross Hyland; son, Corbin James Hyland; mother, Judy Hyland Coltharp; and stepfather, Rodney Coy Coltharp.

Carrie and Corbin, words cannot truly convey my thoughts about the loss of Chase. I am sending you all so much love and praying for you every minute. My daughter Briana and I are very sorry for your loss. Briana had Mr.Hyland for 2 years in high school and we went on his trip to Europe in 2014. We had an amazing time with many great memories. We were saddened by the news and our thoughts and prayers are with you. Jamie Boubel and Briana Kelley
Thinking of you all during this tragic time of loss. Nothing I say will take away your grief and pain, but know that many of us are thinking of you all and praying for you daily.
I wanted to offer my condolences during this time. I told Corbin a few weeks back that I remember him as a little boy. I think Chase’s first year at the high school was my last year there before transitioning to the NGC, so unfortunately I did not have the privilege of working with him too long. But I remember having after school duty by the entrance of the bus stop and I always greeted Corbin as he got off the bus from kindergarten. I told Corbin I would have to watch him walk through the cafeteria area, and then Chase would suddenly appear from around the corner to greet him…always a huge smile on both of their faces. I told Corbin that he was so little that I thought someone was going to put him in their backpack and scoop him up because he was just too cute. And Corbin was so tiny compared to all the high schoolers, but he walked the campus like he owned it. I know people will remember Chase for being an exceptional educator (he was my neighbor’s favorite teacher of all time), mentor, and co-worker, but I will remember him for being such a proud dad who was always excited to see his son at the end of a school day.
Hi Corbin and Carrie, I just wanted to tell you both that I love you and am here for you. Just because Corbin isn’t in 5th grade anymore, doesn’t mean that I am not still a phone call or email away. I was so stunned to hear of Chase’s passing. He was such a strong teacher and one of the smartest people I’ve ever met. I always appreciated his exuberance and his willingness to talk through an idea to find a way to improve it. I’m so heartbroken for his family. I’ve thought about Carrie and Corbin every day since I heard last week. My heart aches and is heavy for your loss. I wish there were words I could say that could lessen your pain. Mr. Hyland taught my son three years at NB High. Dalton actually took his class as a Senior because Mr. Hyland created a love of history in him. Dalton also went to Europe with Mr. Hyland’s group – it was a trip he will never forget. Dalton has some wonderful memories from his classes and his trip. We are sending our thoughts and prayers for your family.
Chase and I started at NBHS together 10 years ago. He was helpful to me when it came to issues or how-do regarding technology especially in Canvas, he knew so much information. We were just recently talking about helping me put together a desktop gaming computer for my son, since I know he just put one together for him and his son. My prayers go out to his family.
Mr Hyland was a phenomenal teacher. We shared a lot of same beliefs and we also shared the Catholic faith. He told me he had an excellent Native american Jesuit priest help him over to become catholic, and In his words “i received all the sacraments at once, and it was overwhelming”. He had a profound impact on my view of History, which I think was important. Ever since I was a kid, i took massive interest in all things history. I especially enjoyed the Asian and European history we learned from him, and watching Braveheart as a class. Last time I saw him was when I worked at HEB No 1. On Walnut, and he said he wanted his son to work there in the future too. He will be deeply missed, and a great man has left this world. My prayers are with the family

I’m so very sorry for your loss of your dad and husband. He inspired so many with his passion as a teacher of history. He was my daughters favorite teacher and was so kind as to let us join his group for the day in Heidelberg one year. I will remember him fondly.
Mr. Hyland taught several AP classes to both my daughter, Kamerin, and my son, Will. We are all deeply saddened by his death and are very sorry for your loss. My two kids, now in college, shared with me that Mr. Hyland was the most amazing and inspiring teacher they have ever had. He taught them how to study, the love of history, and pushed them to be their best self. Kamerin and Will went to Europe with Mr. Hyland in 2016 and 2018, and they consider their trip to be one of the most incredible, educational experiences of their lives. I am beyond grateful for what he did for my two kids. When my daughter was very ill her junior year, Mr. Hyland drove to Dell Children’s Hospital to sit with our family and lift up her spirits. I will never forget his selflessness and ability to touch lives. Please accept our deepest condolences for your loss. He will be missed! The Smiths
Mr. Hyland was by far both of my children’s favorite teacher. Both huge history buffs, they adored Mr. Hyland. He encouraged them, challenged them and his class was anything but easy – but he made learning FUN! I had an opportunity to meet with him during Meet the Teacher 2019 and I can understand why students enjoyed his class. He had a true love for history and his passion for the subject showed in all that he did. He will be missed more than words can say. Chase was such an incredible educator. He is the reason I majored in anthropology, because he showed me how awe-inspiring it was to learn about people throughout history. Not only did he teach and encourage me, I eventually became fellow Texas State Alumni. My favorite memory (and quite an embarrassing one) was when my teenage self asked Mr. Hyland about the Three Musketeers. He looked at me quizzically and was kinda like, what about them? I asked about their role in history, and it was then that he told me that they were fictional characters 🙂 I was highly embarrassed because I had no idea, but he didn’t make me feel bad about it! He just told me more about the book and the history/time period it was set in. Carrie, we have never met, but there are not words to properly express my condolences. Corbin, your dad loved you tremendously. When I was in his class, you were only 5-6 years old! We met once. I just remember any time he spoke about you in class, his eyes lit up with pride and joy.
