Darwin Edgar "Ed" Bremer

Darwin Edgar "Ed" Bremer, a lifelong resident of Bulverde, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 28, 2022 at his home on the family ranch, where he was the fifth generation to reside. Born on September 25, 1940 up the road in Honey Creek, Texas, he was the son of the late Benno Bremer and Vera (Weil) Bremer. Ed is survived by his wife Connie Ruth Plagens Bremer, with whom he would have shared their 60th wedding anniversary on August 11 this year; children, Matthew Bremer and partner Shaun Skura of New York City and Kristin Bremer Moore and husband Steven Moore; granddaughter Vera Moore of Portland, OR; sister Zada Bremer Jahnsen also of Bulverde; in-laws Charlotte Plagens Abram of New Braunfels and Howard Plagens of College Station; and multiple nieces and nephews. Ed graduated from New Braunfels High School in 1958 and was the first in the family to venture off to college at the University of Texas, where he graduated with a degree in Southwestern literature and economics in 1962, funded through a Naval ROTC scholarship. It was there in Austin that he met Connie Plagens and they wed in 1962. He then opted for service with the Marine Corps, serving in Okinawa in 1963-64, Pendleton and Dallas Recruiting, and again in 1968 in Vietnam, eventually becoming a Lieutenant Colonel. After service, he maintained Marine Corps active reserves and turned back to economics, joining Main Bank and Trust in San Antonio, where he came to serve as Vice President until 1977. But it was the great outdoors and a love of wildlife – both nurturing and hunting – that called his soul. As a lifelong hunter and fisherman, as much for sustenance as for sport (the cattle on the family ranch were strictly for market – he had his first beef steak in Austin when attending UT), he grew up primarily on venison and their own farm poultry and pork. Following that calling, in 1977 he traded in his suit and tie for well-worn ranch boots, becoming a wild game hunting outfitter and forming what became Bremer Ranches. Ed then spent the next several decades organizing and leading many hunters through Texas and New Mexico for many a trophy muledeer, elk, antelope and bear. Once retired, his ranch was his life. His daily routine involved running cattle, including 2 longhorns, feeding the deer, turkey, ducks and anything else crossing onto the ranch, along with cutting brush, trimming trees, repairing fences and maintaining a steadfast sense of pride in the family’s homestead. He was a member of the Bulverde United Methodist Church and enjoyed the company of the Bulverde United Methodist Men (BUMMs) and his Emmaus Reunion group, and took an active role in recent years assisting the church’s October Pumpkin Patch fundraiser. He could be found restacking pumpkins every morning at 6am, and taking those that had become soft and mushy in Texas’ October warmth to his cattle and deer. The local San Antonio news loved the story. Ed could be wildly charming and funny. Ed could be ornery. Ed will be missed. A memorial service will be held at Bulverde United Methodist Church, 28300 US-281, San Antonio, TX 78260 at 11am on Thursday August 4, 2022, and following all are invited to join for a BBQ lunch at the Fellowship Hall at Riverside Community Church, 1100 Bulverde Road Bulverde, TX 78163.
