Howard "Garland" Jones

Devoted husband, father, and friend, Howard Garland Jones clearly loved his wife and his family (and Texas)! Garland passed away with his family by his side on December 5, 2022, at the age of 76. The middle of three boys, Garland was born to Reverend Dr. W.W. (Buck) Jones and Adena Christene (White) Jones on April 25, 1946, in Fort Worth, Texas. After moving to several towns throughout Texas and making lifelong friends along the way, he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio, Texas in 1964, attended Texas Christian University, and served in the US Air Force Reserves. Garland’s proudest accomplishment was raising his children Joseph (Joey) Thomas Jones and Christine (Chris) Louise Jones Dahlquist. He loved his family, including in-laws, out-laws, and others fiercely, and was the keeper of the family memories and stories. He was quick-witted and loved to tease and laugh. He loved college football (especially TCU), fishing, history, and western movies. His years as a bookseller and his razor-sharp memory made him a great resource on many topics. Garland is survived by his wife Melinda Jones, his son Joey Jones (Faydra), daughter Chris Dahlquist (Kyle), brother Paxton Jones (Janie), sister-in-law Joyce Jones, lifelong best friend Hardy Sides (Gertie), stepsons Chase Kent (Kristina) and Austin Kent (Jessica), beloved grandchildren, nieces, nephew, and many cousins with whom he stayed in close contact. He was preceded in death by his parents, W.W. and Adena Jones, brother James Jones, and an infant daughter. Garland’s life will be celebrated every day by those that loved him, with a Celebration Service held at 11:00 am, January 14, 2023, at South Hills Christian Church, 3200 Bilglade Rd, Fort Worth, TX 76133. The service will be followed by, at his request, a BBQ for storytelling and laughter.
