On Monday, May 24, 2021, Joanne Schallmo Scee, loving wife, mother of two, grandmother of one, passed away at the age of 72. Joanne was born on November 8, 1948 in Baltimore, Maryland to James and Julia Schallmo (Jim and Julie). She graduated from Sherwood High School near her childhood home in Silver Spring, Maryland. On January 16, 1971, Joanne married Kenneth Edward Scee. They raised a son and daughter, Austin and April Scee together. Joanne had six brothers and sisters, and another six brothers and sisters-in-law from her marriage to Ken. Ken and Joanne divorced in 2000, but remained close through Ken's death in 2012. Joanne found love again with John (Jay) Hays Jr. Jay and Joanne were best friends and life partners, living together in Maryland, then Florida, and finally in New Braunfels, Texas between Austin and San Antonio. She and Jay moved to Texas to be near her son and daughter in Austin, Texas and her sister Amy and her husband Paul who lived down the street from her in New Braunfels. Jay cared for Joanne compassionately in her final months and days. Joanne was surrounded by loved ones the final week of her life, and died peacefully and painlessly looking forward to being reunited with deceased loved ones. Joanne spent her life caring for others. She looked out for classmates of her son and daughter growing up who didn't have stable home lives, and took in kids from the Maryland Sheriff's Boys Ranch. She took in relatives, and dropped everything to be with friends and loved ones when they were in need. She cheered (loudly) for and supported those who were fortunate to have her in their lives. Joanne was preceded in death by her father Jim, mother Julie, ex-husband Ken, and parents-in-law Edward and Alice Scee, and Jay's mother Helen Hays. She is survived by her son Austin Scee, his wife Lee, and their son Austin Myles Scee; her daughter April Scee; her life partner and best friend, Jay Hays, Jay's son John III; and siblings James Schallmo Jr., Amy Webb, Annette Smith, Laura Callaway, David Schallmo and Paul Schallmo as well as brothers- and sisters-in-law Kay Lynch, Carol Robinson, Caryn Nelson, John Scee, Kathy Powell, and Margaret Landolt and their families. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to PowerUP Scholarship Fund - www.powerupscholarship.org.
