Lester Wetzig

lester wetzig
It is with great sadness that the family of Lester Roy Wetzig announces his passing on February 25, 2021 at the age of 85. He was a loving husband, father, brother and Opa to his family and a reliable friend to all that called upon him. Lester was born in El Paso, Texas, the oldest of four boys to Lawrence and Henrietta Wetzig. He was raised in Carrizo Springs, Texas and graduated from Carrizo Springs High School in 1953. Lester graduated from Texas A&I University in 1959 with a degree in Oil and Natural Gas Engineering. He then joined the US Army and spent two years active duty. While stationed in Germany, Lester met and married his wife of 59 years, Almut. After being discharged from active duty with the rank of 1st Lieutenant, Lester returned to Carrizo Springs to start his family with Almut. He began his career with the Texas Highway Department (now TxDOT) where he had previously summer interned as a survey rod man while in college. Lester spent 32 years with TxDOT, retiring as the Resident Engineer for the 3-county area of Dimmit, Maverick and Zavala Counties, responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of its roadway infrastructure. Upon retiring in 1991, Lester continued his passion for cooking. There was always some of Lester’s “famous” homemade hot sauce in the kitchen fridge. Lester also loved golf, fishing and spending time with his grandkids. He is survived by his wife, Almut, brother Donald and his wife Sandra, two sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Jill Wetzig of Round Rock, Keith and Heather Wetzig of Dallas, and two grandsons, Nicholas and Eric Wetzig of Round Rock. Lester was a kind and gentle man who could always be counted on in a crisis to all that knew him. His unique laugh (almost a cackle) was infectious. He will be missed by many. A memorial service will be held at a later time this Spring when it is safer for group gatherings.

  1. I was so blessed to have such an amazing grandfather in my life. He was always so supportive of me and cherished every moment we had together. He taught me everything I know about the stock market and inspired me to do my best to manage money properly. I miss his cooking, his laugh, and his corny jokes. I wish I could’ve said goodbye, and I wish he could’ve seen me graduate, and I wish he could’ve been there at my wedding, and I wish he could’ve seen me get my first big boy job. I am thankful that he at least knew how much I loved and appreciated him. I know he will always be with me in spirit and has/will be watching down from Heaven with God. There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t think about you. I really miss you and love you. I can’t wait to see you one day. Thank you for everything. Rest in Peace Opa.
