Lorraine Elliott

Lori Elliott died at home surrounded by her family on October 13, 2016. She was born July 27, 1935 to Gordon and Almira Tully in Aitkin, MN. Lori learned to read in first grade, got her first library card at the Carnegie Library in Aitkin, and reading was an important part of both her personal and professional life. She received a BA from Texas Western College in El Paso, a library certification from Sam Houston State University, and a master's degree from The University of Florida. While her children were small she was a stay-at-home mom, but later worked as an elementary school librarian in Gainesville, FL and in Austin for over 20 years and loved every minute of it. She was a regular contributor to her professional journals and published a personal memoir after she retired. Lori was an early adopter of computers in school libraries. As an entrepreneur, Lori developed a series of educational games that were marketed to schools nationwide. Lori loved living in Texas. She loved the people, the history, the music, and the traditions. She moved away from Texas five times, only to return as soon as she could. Even at age 80 the strains of Waltz Across Texas would send her to the dance floor. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Roger W. Elliott; a sister, Carol Tully of New Braunfels; three children: Peter (Kathryn) of Lakeland, FL, Sally Georgine Elliott Allin (Paul) of Austin, and Andrew (Wendy) of Austin; six grandchildren: Alexandra and Andrew Elliott, Kelsea and Ryan Allin; and Astra and Clara Elliott; and her friend from childhood, Georgine Smith of San Antonio. Preceding her in death were her parents, Lt Col and Mrs Gordon Tully; a sister, Jean von Dohrmann; and a brother, James Tully. A private graveside service will be held at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery in Austin. A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, 572 West San Antonio Street at 11 am, Saturday, October 22, 2016. The Rev. Jason Adams will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hope Hospice of New Braunfels or the First United Methodist Church Foundation.

  1. Dear Roger and Family, I was so sorry to hear of Lori’s passing. She was such a wonderful person good Mother, wife and teacher. It a loss to so many I had always admired her quiet sweet ways. 2. Thank you for letting us know about Lori’s death. I certainly do remember her, but you are right, not many of us “old folks” left at Bryker Woods. At the beginning of technology she was the “go to” person for us. Loved Lori and have missed her since she left. My prayers for all of her family for God’s love to surround you and give you strength.

  3. To the Elliott family, My name is Michele Rusnak. I taught PE while Lori was at Bryker Woods . I wanted to tell you how thoughtful and caring Lori was to me and to so many others. She welcomed me when I first arrived and let me “hide out” in the library when I needed. You can be very proud of what all she brought to all of us. I wish you all peace.
