Wendell D. Calvert

Wendell Dale Calvert went to be with God on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020. He leaves behind many family and friends who loved him dearly. He is greatly missed. Wendell was an amazing man. Born in Seminole Oklahoma in 1937, he got to Texas as soon as he could. He grew up in Corsicana, Texas; raised by his loving parents Bessie and Clyde Calvert. He went to high school in Corsicana where he was an excellent student and a member of the Corsicana High school band. After high school, Wendell attended Baylor University. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. He was also a proud member of the Baylor University Golden Wave Band. For the rest of his life, Wendell was a supporter of his Alma Matter. He love cheering for his Baylor Bears, and he loved watching the Golden Wave Band. After college, Wendell Calvert began his career in the insurance industry. Ultimately, he was hired by USAA, where he rose to the level of Regional Vice President. In the early part of his career at USAA, Wendell decided it would be a good idea to become a lawyer, so he worked full time, helped raise two children, and went to law school. He received his Juris Doctorate from St. Mary’s University School of Law, and became licensed to practice law in the State of Texas in 1969. Mr. Calvert continued his career at USAA, for many years, and earned his retirement from that great company. Not one to slow down, Mr. Calvert started his second career at Our Lady Of The Lake University in 1993 as an associate professor for the School of Business. He truly loved that school From 1994 to 1995, Professor Calvert became the Interim Dean of the School of Business, and was instrumental in helping the Business School obtain ACBSP business accreditation. Professor Calvert loved to teach. He taught courses in Business Law, International Business, and Business Ethics. He taught both undergraduate and graduate level classes. He served as the Department Chair of Management, and he was the faculty sponsor for Delta Mu Delta. He also organized, and was the professor for multiple international study tours. He definitely loved to travel. Mr. Calvert also loved to expand his knowledge, and so he became a student again, and earned his MBA from OLLU. Professor Calvert’s career at OLLU spanned from 1993 to 2013. OLLU conferred on Wendell Calvert the title of Professor Emeritus. He is still very fondly remembered at OLLU. He was a warm, caring, fun professor. He loved working with and helping his colleagues and students. They still remember his bright smile, his sense of humor, and his hearty laugh. Friends of Wendell Calvert were often treated to stories about his dogs. He had several Salukis and rescues. Watching a Saluki run is a beautiful sight, and something he greatly enjoyed. He was also a world traveler, an avid gardener. Wendell Dale Calvert loved people. He loved to invest in people. If you needed help, he would do whatever he could to help. He was a caring and generous person. He loved to spend time with his family, and his family loved spending time with him. His warm, generous, loving spirit lives on in all that knew him and loved him. He is greatly missed. Wendell Dale Calvert was preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Bessie Calvert, his sister Betty, and his Bother Jimmy. He is survived by his wife Beverly, Son Stephen Calvert, Daughter Kristen Calvert, Daughter in law Mary Calvert, Grand daughter Le’Chele Marinangeli, Grandson Greyson Calvert, Great Grandson Orion Marinangeli, his sisters Pam Calvert and Kaye Walters, his brother Bill Calvert, and his best friend Brad Mount. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, all of whom were very important to him. He enjoyed a close relationship with his niece Teri Schienberg and her husband Howard, as well as his nephew Marc Snow and family. Wendell Dale Calvert was a child of God, and was an active member of the Episcopal Church. For many years his church home has been at St. Francis by the Lake, near Canyon Lake, Texas. A celebration of Wendell Dale Calvert’s life is being planned for July 25, 2020 or at a date and time permitted by the Church.
