Albert Ernest “Skip” Rath, Jr. was born to Albert Ernest Rath, Sr., and Dorothy “Dottie” Paisley Snure on November 11, 1943, in San Antonio, Texas. He attended Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio and then Austin College in Sherman, Texas. At Austin College he met Judith “Judy” Jennings and they were married June 24, 1967. Early in their marriage, Judy introduced Skip to the Gospel message that would define his life and ministry. He acknowledged that he was a sinner who was separated from God and placed his faith in the finished work of Christ on his behalf for salvation. (See Romans 3:23; 5:8, John 3:16, Ephesians 2:8-9 and 2 Corinthians 5:21). Skip and Judy would go on to join a group of like-minded people to start Fellowship Bible Church in New Braunfels in 1977.

Skip received his medical degree in obstetrics from UTMB in Galveston, Texas. He practiced as the first OB-GYN doctor in New Braunfels, Texas, from 1974 until his retirement in 2014. During these years, Dr. Rath delivered over 5,000 babies and performed many surgeries for women all over the world. Dr. Rath served on medical mission trips to Mexico, Central America, Haiti and India. Dr. Rath’s care was demonstrated by his gentle spirit and gracious ability to listen to others.

Skip is preceded in death by his parents, Albert, Sr., and Dorothy Rath. He is survived by his wife, Judy Rath, his four sons, Stephen Anthony Rath (Keri), Paul Albert Rath, Jonathan Edward Rath (Bonnie), and Daniel Andrew Rath (Susan) and fifteen grandchildren. Also, he is survived by siblings, Dorothy “Dottie” Miller (Dennis), John Rath, and Jim Rath (Susan) and many nieces and nephews.

On September 1, 2026, Skip Rath finished his race and heard his Savior say, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Welcome home!”

  1. I am very saddened to read that Dr. Rath has passed away. He delivered my two babies back in 1984 and 1990. He was the most kind and caring doctor. My condolences to his family. May He rest in peace.
