Betty Jean Redpath passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 in New Braunfels, Texas at the age of 97. She was born on October 7, 1928, in Long
Beach, California to William Marshall Mitchell and Lucy Charlotte (Ulyate) Mitchell.
Betty was a much loved mother of two, grandmother of 5, and great-grandmother of 11. She grew up first in Long Beach, CA, then moved to Oklahoma City, OK and Great Bend, KS because of the growing needs of her father’s oil drilling company, The Mitchell Drilling Co.
After her father’s death, Betty and her mother moved back to Long Beach, CA in 1942 to live with her mother’s family. There she attended Jefferson Junior High School and Woodrow Wilson High School where she graduated in 1946. After graduation she worked as a switchboard operator, first for The Associated Telephone Company and then at Security First National Bank until the birth of her children, Susan in 1953 and Diane in 1955.
Betty always had a love for animals and she owned several cats, dogs and rabbits throughout her life, but her greatest passion was for horses. In 1961 she
purchased her first horse. In the years following she owned a succession of horses but her pride and joy was a Golden Palomino; Rebel’s Golden Muffin,
whom she raised from birth. Early on she showed Muffin in a few local horse shows but in 1964 she began riding her in parades all over Southern California.
One of her proudest achievements was being named California State Champion in the Fancy Western Category in 1970. She kept her championship trophy with her from that point on and loved it when visitors would ask her to talk about the trophy.
Betty worked at California State University in the Educational Placement Department as part of the clerical team, for over 30 years, retiring in 1995. She
was a diligent and faithful employee, and was well liked by students and colleagues alike.
After she retired she was able to take many vacations to the southwest, particularly to Arizona and New Mexico, with her good friend, Marina. It was then
that she developed a love for Native American art and began collecting baskets, pottery, blankets, pictures, and jewelry, some of which she kept even after she moved to assisted living.
Throughout her life she maintained a strong faith in Jesus. From the time she received Christ as her Savior in grade school, she remained faithful to the truth of the gospel.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, William Marshall and Lucy Charlotte Mitchell; her daughter, Susan Elizabeth; and great grandson, Nehemiah Jordan Perez.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Diane (Orville) Ewing; grandchildren, Gayle (Victor) Perez, Andrew (Tarin) Ewing, Ashley (Joel) Schelling, Joshua (Victoria)
Bennett, and Jennifer Bennett; great grandchildren, Evan (Eli) Muniz, Elijah Perez, Norah Perez, Riley Ewing, Quinn Ewing, Lucas Ewing, Emery Schelling,
Logan Schelling, Parker Bennett, and Corbin Bennett.
Memorial Services are planned for 6:00 pm on April 10, 2026, Redemption Bible Church, 311 FM 306, Bldg 201, New Braunfels, TX 78130.
Betty was happiest on the back of a horse wearing boots and jeans. In honor of that it is suggested that western wear be worn to her service.
