Carol Lynn Hoggard | November 24, 1938 – July 22, 2026

With hearts full of gratitude and sorrow, we celebrate the life of Carol “Lynn” Taylor, who joined Jesus on July 22 at the age of 87. While our family mourns her absence, we rejoice in knowing that the faith she quietly and faithfully lived throughout her life has now become sight.

If there was one gift that defined Lynn, it was her remarkable ability to make people feel comfortable. Whether she was talking with a nursing home resident, a young soldier donating blood through the Red Cross, a new neighbor, or someone she had just met in the grocery store, she had an extraordinary way of making each person feel valued. She listened with compassion, offered practical wisdom with uncommon common sense, and loved people without regard for status or circumstance. Those who crossed her path often left feeling lighter simply because they had been with her.

Born in Natural Steps, Arkansas, to Carroll and Barbara Hoggard, Lynn learned the importance of hard work and caring for others while helping in her father’s general store. She excelled in athletics, possessed an adventurous spirit, and developed the practical, down-to-earth nature that would characterize her throughout her life. After earning her nursing degree from Texas Woman’s University, she discovered her calling.

She married James Taylor on December 20, 1959, and together they built a life marked by love, faithfulness, adventure, and service through 66 years of marriage. As an Army family, they called multiple states and countries home, but wherever they lived, Lynn built community. She welcomed neighbors, volunteered wherever needed, and created a home where everyone who entered felt like they belonged. She taught her children that the size of a house mattered far less than the warmth inside it.

During her career, she taught nursing students but found her greatest joy in caring for elderly patients, eventually serving as director of a nursing home in Killeen, Texas. Even after demanding days at work, she made family dinners a priority. Later, she stepped away from her career because she believed her teenagers needed their mom at home after school.

Serving others simply defined her life. She volunteered with the Red Cross for many years and faithfully served military communities around the world. Recognition never mattered to her; loving people did.

That same heart was evident after army life when she spent seven years visiting her mother in Eden Hill’s memory care unit nearly every day. Along the way, she became family to countless other residents and staff. One of her greatest privileges in life was to be with her mom when she took her final breath.

Mom loved deeply and loyally. She was independent, refreshingly honest, and never pretended to be anyone but herself. She could be stubborn and quick to speak her mind, but she was equally quick to offer a sincere apology. She celebrated others’ joys, carried their burdens, and remained steadfastly devoted to her family and friends. She also loved racquetball, tennis, harmless pranks, and long walks with her beloved yellow lab, Travis, who filled her empty nest.

Although faith had always been part of her story, one of her favorite sayings in later years was, “I’m so glad we turned left instead of right, on the way to church.” That simple decision led Lynn and Jim to Grace Church, where they found not only a church but also a family. Her faith flourished there, and she was part of Grace Ladies, served as a greeter, and coordinated the greeter ministry for several years. She built friendships that became some of the sweetest blessings of her later years. Today, we are deeply grateful for the way her Grace Church family continues to surround our family with love and prayer.

More than anything, Lynn leaves behind a legacy of faithful service, steadfast love, and quiet generosity. She taught us that people always matter more than possessions, that everyone deserves to feel seen and welcomed, and that the smallest acts of kindness often leave the deepest imprint on a life. We are better because she loved us, and countless others can say the same.

She is survived by her husband, children and their spouses, grandchildren and spouses, great-grandchildren, younger brother and his family, along with many extended family members and beloved friends. She has joined her father, mother, and older sister in heaven.

Though we grieve her absence, we rejoice in the assurance that she has heard the words of her Lord and Savior: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:21)

A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, August 22, 11:00 a.m. at Grace Church, 3240 FM-725, New Braunfels, TX 78130.
