James W. Hastings Jr.

Born on April 16, 1946, in Chester, Pennsylvania, Jimmy was the eldest of 12 children born to union of the late James Woodard Hastings Sr. and Myrtice Hastings. He set an example of strength, responsibility, and perseverance for his siblings throughout his life.

He was educated in the Chester Public School System and proudly graduated from Chester High School in June 1965. Shortly after graduation, Jimmy answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. He faithfully served from June 1965 until his honorable discharge in November 1978. As a proud Vietnam Veteran, he served with distinction and received numerous honors and awards, including the Good Conduct Award, National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. His military service reflected his dedication, courage, and unwavering commitment to duty. Following his military career, Jimmy worked in the construction industry and later pursued one of his greatest passions as a chef in various restaurants. Whether on a construction site or in a kitchen, he was known for his strong work ethic, determination, and willingness to help others.

Jimmy found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved cooking for family and friends, sharing meals filled with laughter and conversation, and spending time fishing whenever he had the opportunity. His warm spirit, infectious sense of humor, and generous heart left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He never met a stranger.

Jimmy was blessed to share his later years with his beloved wife, Sammie Dell Hastings, who preceded him in death. Through this union, he became the father figure to Dell’s children: Larry Emanuel, Cynthia McMenifee, Debra Emanuel, and Michael Emanuel. He was previously married to Marie Woods, and from that union were born his two beloved sons, Michael Hastings and Steven Hastings (Vachon). He was a proud grandfather to Steven Eric Hastings, Harrison Edward Hastings, and Melodi Elise-Love Hastings.
Jimmy is survived by his siblings: Leonard Hastings (Barbara), Drena Brooks (Carl), Marlena Countee (Joseph), Muriel Hastings, Pamela Hastings, Debra Hastings, Donna Hastings, and Moreen Hastings. He is also survived by his cousins Joanne Harris, Jose Rico(Barbara), and Allen Rico (Frankie), along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever treasure the memories they shared with him.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings Kenneth Hastings, Gail Hastings, and Dale Hastings; Nephews Michael Hastings, Damen Hastings, and Neice Lori Hastings; Beloved aunt Gladys Virginia Hastings, cousins Saundra Smith, Kathleen Rico and Uncle Jose and Aunt Julia Rico.
