John Neely Bryan

john bryan

John Neely Bryan left us to be with our Lord Dec 29, 2023 after a brave battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born in Natchitoches, La on Sept 15, 1943 to Marguerite Sutton and John Dillon Bryan. After graduating from NSU, La with two degrees and fulfilling his military commitment with the US Army serving for NORAD in Colorado Springs, John accepted his first job at NASA in Houston, Tx. six months after man first walked on the moon. In Houston, his career included scientific programming to create original applications for several international corporations including Lockheed, ADT and Western Atlas.

John’s nickname was “Skip” and he was proud to be what he called a double Texan: he was descended from those who settled both Fredericksburg and Dallas. In retirement, he lived in Austin and was active in Kiwanis Club and the Austin State Hospital Volunteer Service Council. He worked faithfully with Austin Woods and Waters to bring opportunities for all youth to learn to hunt and fish. Fellow members honored him with the office of president and as Sportsman of the Year.

Beloved and missed so much, he is survived by Sandra “Johnsie” Bryan, his wife of 57 years, his daughter and son-in- law Jennifer and Lance McDaniel, his son John Neely Bryan Jr and three grandchildren: Alex McDaniel, Shannon McDaniel and Brantley Bryan. He has two half-siblings Susan Bryan Sibley and Roger Bryan and their families.

John’s favorite place to be was in Texas. A memorial service and committal to the columbarium at St John’s Episcopal Church, New Braunfels, Tx. will be held Saturday, January 27, 2024 at 11:00 AM.

  1. Sandra, I just heard the news of John’s passing. My heart goes out to you and your family. This has been a very long, hard journey for you all. May you find peace in the days ahead. My prayers are with you.
    Janet Alcede

  2. I’m so sorry for your loss aunt Susie. I will always remember him as a kind and gentle man. Prayers to you and the rest of the family. Rest in peace Skippy🙏💜✝️

  3. Johnsie,
Sending you love to help the healing process as you mourn John’s passing. He was a great man and a great friend. I thoroughly enjoyed out time together with Austin Woods & Waters Club events and the times Tricia and I shared with you and John. He was a Renaissance Man, wiser than his years with so much to give. He will be missed.
    Love, Doug & Tricia DuBois

  4. Sandra,
We have been friends for over 40 years and have so many wonderful memories of time spent with you and Skip. Mardi Gras parties at your Tower Oaks Houston home and in Galveston were always fun and so special! We have both moved to various cities, but always kept in contact and tried to physically visit each other when possible. Skip’s lengthy illness was difficult for you both. Just know that I believe in you and know brighter days you deserve are ahead. Love you both- Carolyn
