Margaret Jane Hickman, a resilient and nurturing soul who dedicated her life to family, faith,
and love went to her heavenly home on November 28 at the age of 89. Margaret, born in
Cooper, Texas, embarked on a journey woven with both joy and challenges, ultimately leaving
an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her.
Married to Elmer Joe Hickman, a devoted Air Force serviceman, Margaret embraced the
military life with grace and commitment. Together, they raised four children – Joanna, Jane,
Jim, and Mary. At the age of three, Mary faced the challenges of epilepsy, enduring grand mal
seizures that forever altered the family’s course. Margaret, the epitome of strength, became the
anchor that held the Hickman household together.
A dedicated military wife, Margaret skillfully balanced the demands of family life, managing the
home, and supporting her husband’s career. The Hickman residence was not just a home but a
haven of love and inclusion. Extra guests at the dinner table were a common sight, reflecting
Margaret’s open heart and welcoming spirit.
Despite the trials posed by Mary’s condition, Margaret’s unwavering care for her daughter
stood as a testament to a mother’s love. She navigated the complexities of epilepsy with
resilience, demonstrating compassion and strength that inspired all who knew her.
Rooted in faith, Margaret ensured her children were raised in the church, imparting a deep love
for Jesus that would shape their lives. Beyond spiritual guidance, she passed on practical
skills, teaching her daughters the art of sewing, cooking, and maintaining a home. Her love for
music, art, and literature enriched the lives of her children, creating a tapestry of shared
passions that endures. Over their nearly eight decades together, Margaret and her husband
Joe forged the closest of bonds, and later in life would often be found sitting on the couch
holding hands.
Margaret Hickman’s legacy is one of love, faith, and resilience. As we mourn her passing, let us
celebrate a life well-lived, marked by the enduring values she instilled in her family. May her
memory be a source of inspiration and comfort to all who knew and loved her. Besides her
