Mary Jo Laney, known affectionately as “Jo” or “Moe,” passed away peacefully at her home in New Braunfels, Texas on January 26, 2025. She was born on November 4, 1933, in Broken Bow, Nebraska to her loving parents, Warren and Lyndel Nelson. Jo was preceded in death by her mom, dad, and brother Jack.
Jo was survived by her three daughters: Ann Mueller (Gene), Jill Rogers (Tim), Sue Mercado (Carlos); grandchildren: Kendra Carter (Stuart) Jordan Rogers, Lane Mueller, Alex Mercado (Brittany) Chloe Mercado; great grandchildren: McClaine Carter, Brady Carter
Jo was a fun-loving and compassionate person who genuinely loved people. She had sparkling blue eyes and a vibrant spunky personality that brought warmth and happiness to those around her. Her greatest treasures were her faith, family and friends. Jo had a strong work ethic and formed many life-long friendships while working for the New Braunfels ISD as a Special Education bus driver and as a docent at The Sopheinburg Museum.
Jo’s faith was an essential part of her life. She worshipped at St. Francis by-the-Lake Episcopal Church. She actively participated in various ministries including, serving on the Alter Guild, teaching Sunday school, the Blue Box Stewardship and was a proud member of the Daughter’s of the King. At a very young age, her mom instilled the inspirational words, “ Let Go, Let God,” which she in turn passed on to those she loved.
Her daughters saw their mom as someone who could do just about anything. She enjoyed crafting, sewing, gardening, and had a passion for writing. She became known as “The Card Lady” by never missing an opportunity to send personally worded greeting cards to friends and family for birthdays and anniversaries.
It is said that when you remember a person, you bring them back to life. Assuredly, she will always be alive in our minds and hearts.

Ms.Jo, we shared a lot of faith together sharing communion each Sunday. I thank God for you and that privilege. You are home now and I know that “sparkling” smile is vibrant and touching all. I will always remember our time and friendship together. Love you, my friend, “Let go. Let God.”
I love you so much Jo Laney. I think of you every night before I go to bed. I have known you for what I feel like is forever although to others it would seem like a short time.Your sickness never made you spoke ill of others because you were indeed a true woman of God. You taught me to be more patient, trusting and brought me closer to our Lord.Whenever I see a cardinal I will smile because I know you’re in heaven. As I write this with tears in my eyes I know you would say ‘Shoikie Let Go and Let God ‘ so I will do just that. Sing with me Jo. NE..BR.. ASKA ! NE..BR..ASKA! GOOOO NEBRASKA!! Love You ,Love You Jo !!

1 Corinthians 13-4) Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails.
