Michael “Mike” Ray Walker, age 79, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
Born April 9, 1947, in Brady, Texas, to Jack Russell “Daddy Jack” Walker and Mildred “Mimi” (Martin) Walker, Mike was raised in Mason, Texas within a family whose ranching lineage in Texas spans five generations. From an early age, he was formed by work, land, and responsibility—riding horses by age five and learning livestock management alongside his parents and grandparents, on the Martin Ranch in Mason County and Walker Ranch in Frio and Zavala Counties.
Mike was known by more than a few nicknames – Clyde, High Pockets, Uncle Mikey, Squeeler, Miguel, just to name a few.
His life was grounded in the practical demands of ranching: livestock care, drought, fencing, water, and the discipline of stewardship. He worked livestock, farmed peanuts, hunted, fished the Llano River, and came to understand land not as possession, but as an obligation. His recognition as Rancher of the Year by the Frio County Soil and Water Conservation District reflected that orientation toward conservation and continuity, and evidenced by his handshake, integrity, grit, and family traditions.
Mike graduated from Mason High School in 1965 and later attended Southwest Texas State University (Texas State University), where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity pledge class of 1969. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1971.
Following graduation, he served as truck sales manager of Smith Chevrolet in San Antonio for 23 years, where he earned numerous professional recognitions. Early in his career, he met Karen Faye (Worthan) Walker at Jim’s Coffee Shop. They were married on July 7, 1979.
In the early 1980s, Mike continued his work at the dealership, and also dedicated significant time and money to ranching and managing the cow-calf operation on Walker Ranch. He instilled his family’s ranching legacy at Walker Ranch through determination, sacrifice, and respect for the land. He often centered around routine and shared time outdoors or next to a warm mesquite fire.
Toward the later part of his career, Mike worked for Rush Enterprises in San Antonio, where he developed enduring friendships with coworkers, and retired in 2010. During retirement Mike spent much of his time cheering for his grandchildren at their sporting events and always wanted to know when the next game was. Mike shared his love for the Dallas Cowboys and the San Antonio Spurs with his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack Russell Walker and Mildred “Mimi” Walker.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Walker; his daughter, Micaela Walker; his son, Reagan Walker, and daughter-in-law Lindsay Walker; his six grandchildren, Walker Lindeman, Jack Bandel, Emmarae Bandel, Zane Walker, Zadie Walker, and Royce Walker; his sister, Karon Kay (KK) Walker Brannies and brother-in-law George Brannies, brother Martin Walker, and sister-in-law Avery Walker; and nieces, Melany Brannies Canfield, Megan Brannies Bierschwale, Camille Walker and Russell Walker.
Mike’s family remember him as stoic, someone who lived with steadiness and restraint and who communicated more through action than words. His recollections of ranch life, family and traditions, sports, hunting, and early work were a consistent presence for his children and grandchildren.
A memorial service honoring Mike and his legacy will be held Friday, June 5, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the residence of George and KK Brannies, 10071 FM 386, Mason, Texas 76856. The family welcomes all who wish to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Frio County Soil and Water Conservation District, 411 E. Colorado St., Room 105, Pearsall, Texas 78061.
