Norman E. Hummel Passed away on May 24, 2026, at the age of 98, following a brief stay at Liberty House.  He was born on August 10, 1927, in Guadalupe County to Berthold and Rosa Hummel.

Norman will be remembered for his fierce competitiveness and passion for playing cards.  He managed to pull off many wins, and keeping the score always seemed to help his cause.  An avid gardener, he generously shared the bounty of his labor during every good harvest season. He was also a dedicated craftsman who spent many seasons deer hunting and enjoying woodworking.  For 40 years, Norman worked as a me for Becker Motor Co., starting in the body shop and working his way up to an experience technician.

Norman and his wife, Dora spent countless nights bowling at Mission Valley Bowling Alley, including competitive prize bowling. Norman also had a remarkable knack for telling stories.  His favorite tales centered around growing up on the farm in Geronimo, his time serving in the U.S. Army, and the “good old days.”

Norman was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 y ears, Dora; his parents Berthold and Rosa Hummel; his sister Benola; brother-in-law Everett Lehmann and Patrick Mollenhauer; and his son-in-law Bobby McNiel.

He is survived by his daughters, Kathryn McNiel, Janet von Kohn (Keith), and Barbara Hummel; and his sister Doris Mollenhauer.  “Opie” will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Elise Garfield (David), Trenton McNiel (Autumn), Chris von Kohn, Phillip Vineyard, and Tyler Vineyard along with five treasured great-grandchildren.
