When I was diagnosed with Hepatitis C in October of 1998, it was pretty much a death sentence. You had your ticket, you just didn’t know for sure when the train was leaving. I remember walking for many miles the night of the day I found out, trying in vain to get away from it. Back then, the mortality rate was 85%. Those diagnosed would either have liver transplants or succumb to the illness. Every bit of information I could find reinforced the fact that there was no hope. I was a condemned man. Then, I chanced upon a little website belonging to a woman, nutritionist and RN going by the name of “The Tea Lady”. Her real name was Ramona Jones and she had bucked the system and refused the treatment of Interferon, which was 20% effective at bringing temporary remission and had similar effects on the body as chemotherapy. They kept you on suicide watch during treatment back then. Mona been treating her own Hep C for 6 years with teas, herbs and natural remedies. Her website listed her phone number and she would council anyone on their Hep C for free. anytime and as long as you paid the long distance phone call charges. She completely bolstered my spirits and removed my giant burden with these few words. “Barry, this is something you’re gonna die WITH, not FROM as long as you make a few minor lifestyle changes.” I stopped drinking that day and began to educate myself on the disease and have done great since. Mona saved my life and I’ll never be able to repay her for the peace of mind that she gave me which has lasted these 15 years since. I hadn’t spoken to her for a couple of years but got the impression that she was doing well. Today, a mutual friend of ours, Vicki Shaw told me that she had heard that Mona had passed away. We’re gonna miss you down here, Mona. Thanks for everything you did and all the lives you made better during your stay.
Leave a condolence or a memory. It looks like the new protease inhibitors didn’t work for me this time but I wouldn’t be here to be continuing the fight if not for you. Thank you for everything.
