Robert McCurry

Robert David McCurry, age 69, of New Braunfels, Texas, passed away unexpectedly on 18 July 2026 and leaves behind his wife of 26 years, Jo A. Hill-McCurry. “I am forever grateful that you were in my life…I just wished you had stayed longer.”

Robert was born on 22 April 1957 in Manchester, Connecticut, to James M. McCurry and Sonja B. (Jackson) McCurry as the middle child of six children. He had four brothers, John, James (Jimmy), Thomas and Steven and one sister, Rebecca. He is predeceased in death by both parents, his brothers, John and James, and Jo’s daughter Tammy Hill-Pitre.

Robert did not have children of his own. He helped raise a stepdaughter, Misty Cauley Brun from early childhood through high school, from his previous marriage. He kept in touch with Misty throughout her adulthood.  Robert also had two stepchildren from his marriage to Jo, Tammy Lynn Hill-Pitre and Joey Don Hill. Tammy was a young adult in the U.S. Army and Joey who was of high school age. Tammy had three stepdaughters, Marisha, Jalyn and Tierra. Joey has one son, Isaac, who knew Robert as Papa Bob.

Robert grew up in South Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut, near Manchester. He was fondly known as Bob to many friends and Rob to some of his family members. He was very civic-minded and always leant a helping hand to others. He protected the young and elderly to ensure they were safe. He would often sing childhood songs to Jo. He loved making people laugh and feel at ease, one of his greatest attributes. Jo and Robert had planned to travel in their motorcoach to see the U.S.A. and find their next home.

Robert spoke of conversations he had with his father, decorating the Christmas tree with his mother, riding the toboggan with all his siblings lined up with the youngest, Rebecca, in the middle. His father had served in the military and taught the boy scout group to survive alone in the wilderness. Robert had advanced to Eagle Scout and was rewarded with the highest honor, Order of the Arrow.

Robert taught himself to play multiple musical instruments, the flute, piano, guitar, trumpet, accordion and was the music director as a teenager at his church. He loved tinkering with his1970 Trans Am he had since he was 16 years old that is Lucerne Blue with Polar White on the hood scoop. He had the once in a lifetime experience of driving his Trans Am on the Michigan International Speedway for the NASCAR Gabriel 400 Stock Car Race June 1979.

Robert was well educated and fond of researching multiple subjects. He graduated from Bolton High School, Bolton, CT in 1975. He attended Community College of the Air Force in1982, Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College in 1986, Austin Community College in 1990. He attended THE University of Texas, Austin, TX, Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in1993 becoming valedictorian and a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society. While stationed in Anchorage, Alaska he attended Wayland Baptist University and earned a Masters of Business Administration with a Minor in Healthcare Law in 2008.

Robert served as an enlisted member in the U.S. Air Force. Basic training occurred at Lackland, Air Force Base (AFB), San Antonio, TX in 1978. He was then stationed at Kessler, AFB Kessler Medical Center, Biloxi, Mississippi as a pharmacist’s specialist. Robert separated from the U.S. Air Force in 1983 at the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSGT) (E-5).

He worked at the University Hospital of Texas in Austin as a life flight nurse. He entered military service as an officer. He first served at Kessler Medical Center, Kessler AFB, Biloxi Mississippi, 1993-1998 in the Open-Heart Surgical Unit. He then transferred to Micheal O’Callahan Medical Center at Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, Nevada, 1998-2001 as the Intensive Care Unit Nurse Manager and later the manager of the primary care clinic He assisted in developing the U.S. Air Force’s Primary Care Optimization program.  Robert was transferred to Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls, TX, to author and instruct the Healthcare Integrator Course from 2001-2006. He was assigned to the 673^rd Medical Group, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Anchorage, Alaska in 2006. He was appointed by the U.S. Pentagon to serve as the State of Alaska Multi-Service Market Director. Robert retired as a Major in 2011. He and Jo traveled the U.S. and lived full time in their Class A motorcoach from 2011 to 2017.

Robert was awarded the following during his military career. The Meritorious Service Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters, AF Commendation Medal with 1 oak leaf cluster, AF Achievement Medal, AF Outstanding Unit Award with 5 oak leaf clusters, AF Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal with 1 service star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, AF Longevity Service Medal with 4 oak leaf Clusters, Basic Military Training Honor Graduate, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon (Rife) and the AF Training Ribbon with 1 oak left cluster.

Robert worked for civil service as the Performance Improvement coordinator for Orthopedics, Brooke Army Medical Center, Joint Base San Antonio, TX from 2015 to 2022. He retired in 2022.

Currently, services are pending.  His wife, Jo, will announce plans for service(s) in the future.
