Santiago "Jimmy" Ortiz

Santiago (Jimmy) G. Ortiz, 73, of New Braunfels, TX was called home to be with our Lord and Savior September 12, 2025. Born October 20, 1951 to Fred and Anita Ortiz in New Braunfels, Texas, Jimmy lived a life dedicated to service and community.

A proud graduated of New Braunfels High School Class of 1970. Jimmy served in the Army National Guard for 6 years attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He dedicated 31 years, 3 months and 1 day to the Comal County Sheriff’s Department. He retired in 2017 as a Sergeant. Following his retirement Jimmy returned to the Sheriff’s Department, working part-time in the commissary department part-time, and volunteered at the Calvary Baptist Church , as well as participating in local events at Wurstfest and local food pantries.

Jimmy was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for over 39 years. He served as a Deacon, led bible studies for the youth, participated in the church’s Master Club, and took great pride in maintaining the church’s 19 plus acres of property. Pastor David Beatty would say, “the property was perfectly manicured by one man”.

He is survived by his daughter Catherine Caballero and husband David, and son Daniel Ortiz and wife Rachelle. Jimmy’s pride and joy were his five grandchildren: Tristan, Noah (and his wife Quetzali) and Isabella Caballero, and Samuel and Sophia Ortiz. Known lovingly as “Pops”, Jimmy was a huge and daily part of his grandchildren’s lives, often attending sporting events, dance competitions, cheer, baptisms and many other functions. He had the honor of officiating the marriage of his grandson Noah and Quetzali in November 2023 and his first great-grandson, Santiago, was named in his honor.

Jimmy volunteered at the NB Food Bank, provided meals for the needy during Thanksgiving, and participated in Christmas caroling at local nursing homes. His hobbies include fishing and supporting his Houston Astros and Dallas Cowboys. He served in the jail service ministry at the Comal County Sheriff’s Department for over 30 years.

The family takes comfort knowing that Jimmy is with his Lord and Savior, reunited with the loved ones who passed before him. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in New Braunfels on Saturday, September 20, 2025 at 10:00 AM, 177 W. Klein Rd., New Braunfels, TX. 78130. Memorials and donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church in lieu of flowers.

A special thank you is extended to St Gabriel’s Hospice in San Antonio.
