Sherryl Ann “Sherry” Nelson, 79, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026, in New Braunfels, Texas.  She was born in Mauston, Wisconsin, on August 19, 1946, to Joe Cantu and Maxyne Hickok Cantu. Sherryl is preceded in death by her parents.

Sherry enjoyed a long career in the VPAA Office at Texas State University for 23 years before retiring in 2003. Sherry enjoyed Crafting, Photography, Writing Poetry, Family History, Family Military History and Genealogy. Sherry loved and enjoyed spending time with her Grandson’s Skyler and Zachary. Sherry loved her Cats and gave a loving home to them.

Sherry is survived by her husband of 60 years, Gary M. Nelson of San Marcos, TX; children, Mike Nelson (Lisa) of Round Rock, TX; grandchildren, Skyler Nelson (Courtney) and Zachary Nelson (Peyton) of New Braunfels, TX; James Hales, Daniel Hales and Sarah Jane Hales of Round Rock, TX;  and brother, Rick Cantu (Vivian) of Corpus Christi, TX. She is also survived by numerous Aunts, Cousins, Nieces and Nephews.

Visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church of San Marcos on Thursday, May 28, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm with a Funeral Service beginning at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow at San Marcos City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Donations can be made in her name to the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter.
