Sterling Bender
September 21, 1985 ~ April 27, 2020
Sterling Bender, 34, passed away on April 27, 2020 in Buda, Texas. He was born on
September 21, 1985 in Austin Texas and was lovingly known as Squirrel among his
friends and family. He was a gentle soul, beloved by all who knew him, always humble,
kind, generous, sweet, and extraordinarily funny. He was a clerk and battery maker at
Batteries Plus Bulbs in South Austin for over 7 years and was loved by coworkers and
customers alike for going above and beyond what was expected of him. Sterling was
notorious for charming wild animals into friendship, ironically, especially squirrels. He
was an exceptionally talented musician, beginning in middle school orchestra on
double-bass. Over the years he learned to play every instrument he touched, including
mastering classical-Spanish style guitar, completely on his own, along with creating
numerous original compositions, including beats and both electronic and classical
music. He also was an avid gamer, known as “Squirrelpion” to his Twitch followers,
with a network of friends around the world that came to appreciate not only his
passion for gaming but also his hauntingly beautiful guitar playing and outrageous
sense of humor. He seldom took life seriously and had an uncanny ability to make
people laugh even during the most somber situations. He will be dearly missed by
every life he touched.
Sterling is survived by his beloved grandmother Momo, Edith Holland of Buda, who
raised him, as well as his siblings, almost Irish twin sister Alexandrea Dee Bender, her
husband Cayce Crummer, and nephews Arion, Skye and Aesun of Kyle; sister Sally
Bender of Oklahoma City, sister Marianne Rafferty and her family of Los Angeles,
brother Austin Bender of Brookeland, brother Matthew Bender and his wife Stephanie
of Salem, Oregon, uncle Charles Hinkley and his family of New Braunfels; aunt Yolanda
Hinkley of Buda; aunt Andrea Hester and her family of Dallas; aunt Gwen Whitlock and
family of Denton, aunt Lynn Dunn and family of Denton, Uncle John Bender, numerous
cousins, and a plethora of amazing friends. He is preceded in death by his mother,
Sandie Dee Bender, and his father, Richard Lee Bender, as well Aunt Shauna Jacobson,
and Uncle Mark Bender.

My sweet nephew. I hope you have finally found peace. Love Aunt Andi
I knew Sterling through my grandson, Adam, and Sterling was such a wonderful person with a great heart. I would go to him at the battery store & he would walk out to the car with me due to me being partially handicapped making sure I got to my car safely. I will miss Sterling. I hope he is at peace now & walks with Jesus. Prayers are with his family & especially Ms Holland as I know how much she loved him. I raised Adam so we have a kindred. RIP Sterling. We’ll see you another day.
https://m.soundcloud.com/squirrelpion I wanted to share a link to his music here. I will miss him greatly. He was a true friend.
Love you brother. Ill always remember those nights skating at southwood mall back in high school. You always kept it real. Until we meet again and skate on some clouds. -Marshall
Will miss the laughs brother. I hope you are at peace and that you know that you are missed. My condolences to Sterling’s family and friends. The MK community lost a great one…
Squirrel my man. When my first wife passed you left such an awesome message on one of these things that the family was talking about it afterwards. For some reason the fact that it was from you made me laugh. You clearly had the biggest heart of anyone that I just knew from the internet. I sorely regret I didn’t get to know you better. There is so much I am just now learning about you that I wish I had known when you were here. Anyway, I’ll quit gushing now. Lord knows the kind of fake gay crap you’d reply to this with if you were here. May your music reverberate through the heavens, and if you need a female voice to accompany you, go find Sarah… and tell her hi for me
When I was in middle school we moved to Austin, I was the new kid who didn’t know anyone in this new place and Sterling befriended me and made me feel welcome and introduced me to all his friends. He even told me what was the cool radio station to listen to lol. You always made me laugh and you will be miss.
We briefly dated my freshman year. Stayed friends for a while. I just clearly remember Sterling, you had cheese on your ceiling! Haha! Because you were running an experiment to see how long it would stay there! I will never forget that. I’m gonna miss your silly posts, humor, heart, and personality. I’m so sorry that you were hurting so much. Miss you
My name is David Brown and I met Richard Bender in 1979. He moved on to Plumewood Street in Spicewood Sorings @ Balcones in Austin, around the corner from where I lived as a teenager with my family. We became fast friends. Sam also became a friend when they met and married. I moved to Nashville in 1992 and Richard gave me a copy of his prized “Cosmic Play” rock opera, the night before I left, that I still have. I went on the internet last night on Tuesday February 15, 2022, in an attempt to find him as it’s been about 6 years since we last spoke. I was heartbroken to come across Sterling’s obituary. I never met Sterling but am blown away to read how accomplished he was as a musician. I listened to his works last night on line and was very impressed…. he has his fathers talent along with his mother and father’s looks as I see both of them in his picture. I was also crushed to read that both Sam and Richard already have passed on. I played the rock opera last night in remembrance. In the tape case I had put one of Richard’s business cards that had a hand written note on the back by Sam… I remember well one night we were having a music conversation and I stated I could not understand one of the lines in the lyrics to a Boston song. Sam knew it and wrote it down on the card. I have included it in a pic with this post. My condolences to all as I miss them, been so many years but seems like just yesterday. I welcome any contact @ (276)970-9043to share memories. A sad day and I was not expecting to find all this when I started to search the internet……I can’t believe how time has flown by these last 40+ years. RIP my good friends, RIP😥
Alex would always tell me great stories about you. Now that we are grieving her as well, it made me think of you. Maybe y’all can play some tunes up there in heaven. I hope y’all find peace, and rest easy.
