William Joseph (Bill) Hughes, 95 of New Braunfels, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 2, 2023. He was proceeded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Gloria Jean Hughes and their loving sons William Jr. (Bill), and Robert (Bob). He was also proceeded in death by his parents William and Viola (Mundt) Hughes, his brother Bob Hughes, and sister Carol Cross.
Bill is survived by his loving family, sons Mike (Jody), David (Barbara) and Dan (Mary), daughter Laurie, daughter-in-law Janie (Robert+), grandchildren Jacqueline (Scott) Mike Jr. (Chelsea), Jessica (Sean), Daniel (Chloe), Travis (Michaela), Bobby (Vendela), Stephen (Sonya), Jennipher, and great grandchildren Caddis and Jonah. He is also survived by many loving cousins, and nieces and nephews.
Bill graduated from Central High in Scranton, Pennsylvania at the age of 17. With his mother’s permission, he enlisted in the Army Air Forces. Bill did his basic training at Lackland Field in San Antonio and graduated from radio mechanics school at Scott Field, Illinois. Upon graduation, he was shipped overseas to a radio station in Okinawa, Japan. He served three years in Japan and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.
After his military service, he attended the University of Scranton for 2 years, and then transferred to the University of Detroit, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s of Electrical Engineering. It was while he was at the University of Detroit that he met the love of his life, Gloria Jean, who was attending Mercy College of Nursing. When they married in 1953, Bill was working in a management training program for General Electric. For the next 5 years, they moved 5 times and had their first 4 children. They decided it was time to settle down and Bill took a job with Leece Neville in Cleveland, Ohio, where their last 2 children were born. He remained with Leece Neville, for the remainder of his career. However there were three more moves in their future, one to Livonia, Michigan, then to Brownsville, Texas and finally retiring in 1991 to their forever home in New Braunfels.
Bill was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic community, the New Braunfels Noon Lions, and New Braunfels Knights of Columbus Council 4183 and 4th Degree Assembly 1791. He was happiest when his children and grandchildren came to visit and loved reminiscing about growing up in Scranton and his military service. He loved traveling in Europe with his beloved wife, family vacations, big family dinners, golfing with his sons, and volunteering in the New Braunfels community. He was a great Dad with a big heart and will be truly missed,
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, December 19th at Lux Funeral Home Chapel from 6-7 p.m., with the Holy Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m., A memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, December 20th at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. A reception will be held after Mass at St. Mary’s Hall.
Donations in Bill’s honor may be made to the K Of C Council 4183 at 111 Landa St., New Braunfels, Texas 78130. On your donation you may specify The Gabriel Project, Rachel’s Journey, or Council 4183 Christmas Baskets. These were Dad’s favorite charities.
