Sonja Jane Pittman, age 71, loving daughter of Willard Carroll Pittman and Thelma Irene Klemish Pittman, joined her beloved parents and brother Stacy Scott Pittman in Heaven on the morning of July 22, 2022. Sonja was born in Odessa, Texas, and resided in San Marcos, Texas at the time of her death. She was raised in Grandfalls and Monahans, Texas and was a 4th generation resident of Ward County, Texas, with a Pioneer Ancestry dating back to the 1890’s. A graduate of Monahans High School in 1969, Sonja sang alto in the MHS Choir where she played the leading role in the musical “Oklahoma”. Her friendly personality and beautiful smile enveloped her many classmates and friends at MHS where she was honored as ‘Most Beautiful’ and Track Sweetheart to name a few. Sonja was a stellar high school athlete having played on Monahans’ First State Championship Volleyball Team her 1969 Senior year. Always a gracious and humble teammate she led as Team Captain and together the 69’ Loboette Volleyball team put Monahans on the State Volleyball Championship Map and set a long running State Championship Tradition. That year Sonja was named All District, All Region, All State and was a West All Star. Her great love of Volleyball continued as a walk-on and later scholarship recipient to play for her former high school Coach Janice Hudson at Texas Tech University. Sonja played all four years on the Red Raider Volleyball team graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education in 1981. While at Texas Tech Sonja was instrumental in promoting women in athletics with numerous ‘Spotlight’ interviews as an athlete who combined talent, beauty and a career in Physical Education. She went on to a successful coaching and teaching career as Varsity Volleyball Coach at Midland High School in Midland, Texas. “Your chances of success in any undertaking can always be measured by your belief in yourself” was a quote Sonja believed and lived by throughout her life of many accomplishments. Her resume’ included a plethora of occupations that spoke of her many talents and service to others. She supported herself through college as a waitress; worked as a fundraiser for Texas Trial Lawyers Assoc.; earned her Real Estate License and after retirement from coaching/teaching owned and operated a consignment business in Midland, Texas. “Spread LOVE everywhere you go. Be the living expression of God’s kindness; kindness in your face, in your eyes, in your smile and in your warm greetings”. Sonja wrote this quote in one of her journals and she did this everyday of her life to her family, friends and everyone she met no matter the circumstances. She will be dearly missed by her family and many lifelong friends. Survivors include: sister Sue Pittman McPeak of San Angelo, TX; brother, Tommy Pittman and wife Sharon of Monahans, TX; sister Connie Pittman of New Braunfels, TX. Nephews: Spencer McPeak (Amanda), Chase Okrasinski (Jessica),Lance Okrasinski, Shane Okrasinski(Nellie),Jason Pittman (Larissa),Logan Pittman, Cody Pittman and Shawn Levy. Nieces: Trina Slagle(Jerry),Lori Heard (Peanut) and Malissa Ordonez(Frank). Sixteen great nieces and nephews. Sonja was preceded in death by her parents, brother Stacy Scott Pittman and brother-in-law Wayne McPeak. A Celebration of Life will be held at later time. Please honor Sonja’s memory with a donation to a charity of your choosing.
